i was reading a piece and the writer finally said something worth repeating.. "Trapper & Predator Caller Field Editor Lance Homman says the best coyote callers spend more time learning about coyotes and less time worrying about learning to call ". I would agree.

That's sound advice. Knowing why they come and where they are is far more important than the sound you make or play.

LOL - Yep, Eric, very true! And is why I've always said that one does not need to sound good on a call to bring in coyotes. Now & then some writers do say it well. What is REALLY amazing to me though, are the writers that have been predator hunting for decades, & usually highly regarded, yet say some of the darndest things. One of my favorite lines was, that a coyote making a howl, would have to "wait approx 30 minutes before he is able to howl again". OMG, & that statement was supposedly made by one of the most well known & oldest out there. I will not mention his name, but there was a thread on this forum a few yrs ago about this. Of course that's nonsense, especially anyone that has seen coyotes howl repeatedly. It's even more surprising (to me) when some (experienced folks) agree with that. Which is cool, I guess? LOL Anyway, that was a classic to me, & one that I will never get over. So much for the experts!

Its not 30 minutes its 45 minutes and 30 seconds. Thats so true erick. Frank don't forget you also need to drive to the remotest places to hunt them also.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

And wait another 30 minutes for things to "calm down" before making a stand?

Big K I read the same article...what I also thought was interesting was that the coyote has 250 million scent receptors in the nose compared to our 5 million...also the info about scent spray and various reasons for overly cautious yotes other than being shot at.

I think if you wanna howl though you need to sound pretty good, not so much on distress calls. Getting out and scouting and making stands will kill more dogs than practicing your calls and driving your dogs and neighbors crazy.
