The winds blew as they always do here, we fished the lee side if you can call it that. There is something remarkable about this place, I'm not spiritual yet this place makes me want to be : ) I had several encounters with this stallion, he allowed me to move in pretty close, as close as I was comfortable anyway. We live amongst some of the most spectacular places in the world living here in Northern California, if you've never visited the high desert you should - even if you don't fish : )

They are beautiful fish and the area is magnificent. I used to fish there allot. A friend of mine was a professor at the University in Reno who help in reestablishing the Lahontan Cutthroat trout in Pyramid. We fished their allot with his expertise in catching them. My best record for catching trout is there with over 60 in one day and they were all the size of yours and bigger. Are you a ladder fisherman too. That's how I started there and switched to trolling for them to get big numbers. That lake is like the ocean when the winds come up. We have camped out on the far side of the lake because the waves got so bad. But the fishing always made up for any inconvenience.

I use several camera's these are from a Nikon 5100 fish pics in the water I always use a polarizing filter, omega and nikon lenses. Recently I started playing with a full frame, it's just a lot of camera to lug around fishing so I use it only for landscape shots.Shooter John - no ladder, I did that style 20 years ago at Walker and no bueno for me. Here we fly fish, cruising the shores sight fishing. We're in an area you typically never see anyone fishing in. The large cutthroats cruise non-stop so we just kind of follow them around.

Yes our very best luck has always been the North end of the lake and around the islands close to shore.

I grabed one of the photos for a screen saver with a black border. Thank you.I've been trying to do a little flyfishing this week but it just hasn't worked out. Involuntary time off from work is kind of nice in some ways but the places I want to fish are best not done alone. Finally said to heck with it and hooked up with a freind for a mt bike ride this Sunday. Their logic for the location is it's all uphill, so if one of us has a heart attack it's all downhill to get help.

I do like the logic, only in most of the places I go, there is no help at the bottom of the hill.

Speaking of Kayak I just bought a Hobie Mirage Outback, wondering how it would hold up in Pyramid? I know it can get pretty windy out there. Anyone know?

I am heading out to do some camping at my in laws place which is about 20 minutes from the north west side of Pyramid Lake. I know I need to buy a day pass from the Indians to fish there. What type of bait or fishing technique knock the lahotian trout dead? I have a float tube and flippers, can I use that? I heard it is super shallow and guys sit on floating ladders or something. I will not be bringing a ladder but will have float tube on hand. Any tips on catching these babys will be appreciated..

My understanding is that a float tube is risky due to the high winds that come up. I've spent a lot of time in an old Caddis tube and know that they can handle the waves rather well but it's the kicking against the wind to get back to shore that turns into an issue. Be careful.

Winds can be vicious at Pyramid Lake. The waves can be so bad we've been forced to hold up on the East side until the waves calmed down as it's like an ocean. As for fishing and techniques we have always trolled there for trout. We use a variety of large spoons and plugs. Most of the ladder fisherman are fly fishermen. It's a beautiful place to visit, maybe more so in a boat.

Thanks. Ya I found there website. Looks like I might have to do some more research to find out if it is even worth it to fish from the shore.
