Im out working in the yard today, And I See a pair of coyotes comming down my road. So I watch them untill they drop off the road into a ravine that runs past my house. So as soon as they were out of sight I run back to the house and grab a rifle. Im thinking Im about 300yds ahead of them so I head down past our barn and set up where I think they will come out in the open. So far Im not exposed to the ravine, but Im moving quickly. I sit down on a rock with good cover around me and wait about 5 minets. My mind was going quickly thinking that any second they would step out into the open, so another 5 minets goes by with no coyotes. Now Im wondering if they got past me. at that point I take out a mouth call and blow it a couple of times. This is where things got a little wierd, a pair of small hawlks buzzed passed my head and a ground squirrel popped up on a rock not two feet in front of my muzzle. Im staring down the barrel at a ground squirrel and still waiting for the two coyotes to show when the Squeek starts to sound the alarm and does his best raindance! Now Im thinking, Do I blast the squirrel for being so stupid, Or keep still and quiet in hopes the coyotes are still comming.I took option #2 and never did see the coyotes again, And the squirrel ran off to piss me off another day!So what would Youall have done? Well, second guessing ourselves is often part of coyote hunting... especially when we don't close the deal. Sometimes a stand won't go right no matter what we do... or don't do! We just can't win! With that said, one thing I would have done different is not waited 10 minutes before calling. In other words, as soon as I got situated in my stand, I would have started calling right away, not knowing how far away they had already traveled &/or not wanting them to get even further away (by waiting). But again, it is anybodys guess if calling right away would have produced different results or not. Just the only thing "different" I personally would have done is all. Right or Wrong! LOLI have a hunch that next time they will be in more trouble. lol Good Luck

Have you considered the other simple fact that they may have a den or bedding area in the ravine. That would explain why they never showed, and I have seen coyotes that are near a den/bed not want to move at all (full I guess?). Just something else to consider.

I would have went back to the house and got a good drink and after a few probably figured out the worlds problems and whatever made those coyotes dissapear, maybe.

Well that's an easy one. I would of put an arrow in the squirrel and waited for the coyotes to fall asleep and then go look for them. :harhar1[1]: . OK i would of miss the squirrel spend 45 minutes trying to find my arrow all the while scaring off the coyotes. Or hit the squirrel and watch him take my arrow down his hole, spend 45 minutes digging it up . Scaring off the coyotes. I think you did the right thing.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

change locations a bit and give about 5 minutes worth of pup distress. most likely are bridesmaids from last season,as the bitch is busy with the young and the males usually hunt alone. Thats all the guessing I am going to do ,as i need another beer to make a more detailed guess on a possible 20,000 situations. Go with what you know.. A pair of coyotes. tried to call them in and nobody showed up means 3 things. Either not interested or couldnt here you, or they showed up not for you to see. anything else is pure guess work.
