I think I have this kinda figured out, but need to run it out there and get the skinny.Talking regular rifle hunting, but probably not going to be going on a serious deer hunt this year. So I know I want to just do points for my 1st priority.I may get out for S&Gs, or a friend of a friend is working on some private property oppourunity so both would likely be Zone A, either north or south. Do I have to put in for that as my second option, or can I just wait and buy a tag for the A zones after the draws are over (doesn't look like they run out of tags during the draws for A zone)? This should be simple enough, but don't want to wind up missing some little detail.

It doesn't cost you anything extra to build up some preference point plus you might get lucky. Buy your tag early and go for G3 as your first choice and then on your second choice put down the zone you really plan on hunting. You can't luck out and get a tag of a lifetime if you don't put in for it. If you don't get drawn on your first choice you will get your second or third choice and one preference point.

I buy an A zone tag every year, I personally have never seen them run out. I usually go for G-3 and either put A zone, or D3-5 as my second choice because I'll never draw the G-3 I end up with an A and a D tag every season.

Great - thanks for the advice! Idaho was easy - Do you want a deer tag? yes. Now just look up season and rack limit ofr your zone. There were some small closed areas you could put in to draw for, but in general, a tag was good anywhere in the state.GOing to take a while to get this Cali system figured out. Particularly as I learned you need to go hunt to figure out where you want to hunt...

Just apply early and get a preference point every year by applying for a premium tag on your first choice.

You can get A zone, or d3-4-5 over the counter. I usually get a D-6, a bear, and a archery only tag. I am able to hunt almost anywhere. except premium zones.

Just put PD for your first choice for preference deer point and put the area you want to hunt as your second choice.

I just purchased my 2012 License Online and Put X7A as my first choice, odds are I won't get it so I may end up getting the preference point. Wish me luck. Would love to get on my first buck this season.

I've never put in for any special hunts before, I plan on buying my license tomorrow and was planning on puting in for SB County's Muzzleloadr hunt MA3. Do I just put MA3 in the first choice and then put "A" as my secondary ? Or would I have had to send in a different form for that hunt ?

Yes, put the muzzle loader hunt as your first choice and "A" as your second choice.

Good luck! And sight your smokepole in at 150 yds. It has paid off for me in the past.

I believe your first choice has to be a premium hunt.
If your zone isn't a premium then you need to put PD as your first choice and you get preference points towards future draws.
Zone A is over the countrerr like stated so put that a choice 2- I will be hunting zone A this year. I also got a second deer tag for D13
