I am new to the area and I am hoping someone knows some good areas around lake Henshaw that are good for Turkey's, all I can find is private land. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum Ken. Don't be insulted if nobody gives up their honey hole or go to spots for hunting. The social edicate tends to be to share techniques and ideas and not so much locations. It's kind of understood that if you want something bad enough then you will get out there and spend a little sweat looking for it. It's particularly that way with hunting public land. Once someone posts a location on a blog or a website, everybody and their mother who has a computer can see it and are often out there the next day or weekend. This website is great for developing friendships and hunting buddies. I would try to get some maps of the area and start hiking and reconing some of the public land. Most of the hunting and fishing buddies I have had over the years want to hang out with someone who brings a little something to the party or someone they can trust won't go blabbing off what a great spot such in such is. :signgreatreport3kg: Mc

Ken, I don't know anything about your area, but I would suggest checking out BLM land, and national forest. You never know, you might turn up your own great hot spot. Welcome to the club, hang around, you will most likely learn other members tricks, and wisdom. There are a lot of people here that have answers to the questions that you haven't asked yet.Tom

For that area you need a Cleveland National forest map,not too much blm land holds turkeys out there. But I will say your heading in the right direction I shot one on public land there last year. Its tough but fun at the same time, good luck and put in some work.

Cleveland NF is busy this time of the year. There are all kinds of new hunters with new shotguns and new gear, which draw the worst kinds of human beings. Make sure you don't leave any valuables in view or you'll come back to a vandalized vehicle. Some of my buds were out a few weeks ago scouting and some SOB's wanted their turkey vests and calls so they broke into their truck and took almost everything. My friends were only gone for 10-15 minutes but that's all it takes. I drive a jeep and usually take it far offroad so if someone wants to steal anything, I know it's got to be another hunter. Times suck gentlemen-be careful out there!

Ken, CNF map and also check out the DGF web site for info. Your going to need to burn some shoe leather and don't be surprised if you don't score your first year or two. Everyone who has been hunting them for a year or two knows the areas they are in and it does get crazy out there. Once you find an area you want to hunt just make sure of where you are as land owners will call the DFG and have you busted in a hot min. around that area. Also the areas you can hunt can make a difference if your using a bow.. As some areas area bow only and some it matters not..
