Last year I got my first taste of deer hunting and I can say with conviction, although I ended up empty handed, I can't wait to get back at it.For the last year or two I've spent researching, and spending S%$tloads of money on guns, gear, range practice etc. I had scoped out an area before the season started and while on my way back to my truck I startled a doe and a fawn. I was about 35ft away from them when they sprung up and disappeared. I marked the spot in my GPS and decided to start my first hunt from that area in the following few weeks.Now my hunting buddy and I were at the truck putting on our day packs, full of stuff we probably could have left in the truck. But we were green and very excited to be out on our first hunt. You'd swear we were going away for a week! The guns were packed into the scabbards in our fancy new packs too.Anyway, we walked across the road and into the woods, I'd say about 30-40ft and there jumped up a Fu&%ing giant of a buck and all we could do was look at it spring of into the shadows as we fumbled with our fancy new packs.I felt like a real tit at that moment, but I really enjoyed my weekend. We went a few more times and saw the same buck twice more but were unable to get a shot off. I'd like to go into more detail about what we did and how we hunted to get feedback on what we were doing right or wrong but I have to go now. However, I know now not to keep the rifle in me bag!!!

Good story, but keep your rifle ready at all times in the field. That means one in the chamber, and the safety on. But not in a vehicle.Be smart, be safe.Tom

You've got the right idea get off the road where there is no people and your odds increase and everything you could possibly need deer hunting can be kept in your fanny pack. That day pack is gonna kill you when it's gotta be carried out with a buck. Really all you should need is a good knife binos and your rifle it's easy to buy accessories but most can be left at the truck. And I would suggest watching some videos on game care since both you and your buddy are new to it, learning to properly handle and process game will make it more enjoyable and you'll love the better product.
