I am thinking on building me a varmint AR-15 223 .what are you guys using ? what do you think about RRA 20 inch upper.http://www.rockriver...category_id=269

I have a bushmaster predator upper on my S&W15 lower and absolutely love it...it has a 20" fluted match grade barrel and shoots 1/2" groups all day long with handloads and they arent very expensive!

White oak makes an awesome custom quality upper for about the same as a rock river but they usually take six months

I sure like my White Oak upper. It looks nice too. I just like the fluted barrel.I just don't care to hunt with these as they aren't comfortable to pack around.

I have the rra 20" varmint. You will not be dissapointed. with any ammo i put through it i can get an inch group at a hundred, when i get some descent ammo sinks to 3/4ish and when i put it's fav. in i can sink it down to a half easy. just trust me, when it comes to shooting squirrels, the gun will out shoot you

Casey did you have the trigger done.What do you think would be the difference between the 20 to 18 to 16 barrel length.Sj that is one sweet rifle .............the only draw back coyoteing hunting with the AR-15 is loading a chamber with out Making to much noise you guys know what I am talking about.

I have the RRA 20" and it's a great upper. Got me a few foxes this season.

You may want to check that gun again John, It looks to me like they put the rifling on the wrong side of the barell,I think it goes on the inside.Tom

A quick google search found this...Since alot of people are getting into AR's the question always comes up on velocity loss with a short barrel. A while back I did a test using 6 different Colt guns with XM193 ammo. I know different ammo and powder may make a big difference but it gave me a reference to use. I found it the other night and thought someone might be interested.14.5" 1/7 twist...3068 fps16" 1/7 twist...3169 fps16" 1/9 twist...3147 fps16" 1/12 twist...3099 fps (old SP1 made in 70's,lots of rounds)20" 1/7 twist...3275 fps20" 1/12 twist...3279 fps5 shots averaged on the Ohler chronograph at 12'Notice from 16-20 the difference is just over 100 fps and from 14.5-16 the difference is also about 100 fps.I shot 2 14.5" barrels that day but didn't know the twist of one so I didn't list it but the velocity was comparable.Hope that helps. Btw there were a metric ton of results for the querry.I have no idea how or why but my wife gave her consent to an AR purchase a few weeks ago. I'm still digging in the seat cushions but getting closer. Being new to AR's makes the lower/upper and caliber selectiond somewhat of a daunting task

That's pretty funny but I have bad news my Ar build got derailed by another gun a S$W classic 29 44 mag

Im also partial to my 24 inch varminter Bushmaster, installed a Timney trigger 2.5 lbs. and it shoots like a dream!

I like my two AR-15s for coyote calling but I like bolt action rifles much more for shooting varmints.

If you are using it for coyotes mostly just get a 16" or 18" heavy barrel, a bull barrel is way too heavy and gives you no advantage over a heavy barrel.
