Was out with a buddy this weekend waking into a spot another buddy told me about when we jumped a yote sleeping. He was about 50 yards out, all I saw was his head bobbing as he was trotting away not looking to spooked so I suggested we take the time to set up and try to lure him back in. We find a decent clearing (for the area...real brushy definitely shotgun material of which mine was home in the safe) and set up both of us watching the expected lanes of approach. I hit a female howl for about a minute and get a response from a pack that sounds about a half mile away so I switch to the coyote locator and run it through a couple of times and the pack went completely ape. My buddy’s eyes were big as saucers and he kept whispering they're coming man they're coming. I told him to shut up watch his lanes. Once they got quiet I knew they were traveling and sure enough 30 seconds later as I am alternating my view from one lane to another I look right nothing left nothing right two yote coming fast I try to get the lead yote in my scope but as soon as I do he is turned and buggin out I look right to see two more off at about 25 yards kind of still so I set up on one, have him in my sights fire boom there they go a miss how is that possible? I guess it happens. Anyway we go to check it out because he was standing behind a bush he may have fallen into and nothing but a big red blood splotch on a rock then more in the grass where he was running. The blood trail was thick about four inched wide in places and we followed it for about 75 yards then the last spot was a drop on top of a rock then nothing no blood no nothing like he just vanished or got triaged by one of his buddies. A real capper. We gave him the obligatory hour of searching meticulously and found nada. Any ideas on what this guy did. I'll take any suggestions aliens etc etc. Thanks. On top of these four or five we saw 4 others in different locations but didn't manage to get a good shot set up on any of em so we decided it would be better to come back later...we know where they live now.Anyway it was great find a new spot with still tons of open land to explore!Good Hunting,Paul

He might even be under a rock or bush real close. What color was the blood dark red or pink and foamie. Get a dog to find it . Just about any dog will work they all like the smell of somthing dead.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Blood trails are sometimes pretty hard to follow, I followed one from a deer for a couple of hours sometimes on hands and knees, it wouldn't have taken so long except that it was opening day and there was a lot of activity, found my deer (gut pile) someone had taken it.

With the ammount of blood you say that you found, I doubt that he is far away. Most of the ones that have done that to me are rarely more than about 60 yds away. It just takes "dogged" determination to find them sometimes. Good luck.

Man, I HATE when that happens... Anyhow, I'm just not so sure. I've seen seriously hit coyotes spewing blood out like a faucet and still manage to run a l o n g g g g g ways, hundreds of yards. Not usually, but on occasion. And if there is much vegetation, it could be almost impossible to find without a dog. Eric's idea of watching for birds is another good one, along with just plain revisiting the area over the next couple days or so.It happens!

The last one I shot did the run and disapear too. But I was close to home and turned my lab out to find it. after the dog found it I was shure Id never have found this one on my own. it was currled up in some tree roots. it had crawled through an opening not much bigger than my hand. DR

I think we've all had it happen. Those coyotes are a sneaky animal and I'll bet, as has already been mentioned, he's dead within feet of your last sign. It is very frustrating but it happens and you must either spend the next week looking and pining over it or move on and kill some more. I don't like walking away from a blood trail anymore than the next guy but it does happen.
Now, don't try to get away! I am more muscular, more cunning, faster, and larger than you are, and I am a genius. Why you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten.

thanks for the input guys and yes my shotgun would have been great. I should be out there again in two weekends but will do it solo no distractions. I think that dog just found a hole and up and died. To bad he was a good looking healthy yote. I am still amazed at what these animals can do as far a magic. Need to get one down its been awhile.
