Do you run into arrogant and racist people often? Bishops economy is based on agriculture and state workers from prison. It's like a lot of towns that are small and isolated the people are only as bad as you expect them to be. I have been there twice for mule days and found the people to be great.

Yeah, no kidding, eh? Not sure what's that all about?Anyway, don't expect to find too many folks with loose lips for that area or knowledge of "good" areas to hunt coyotes there. So you're likely on your own... as with lots of areas in this state. In other words, google earth, blm & forestry maps and phone calls to various agencies and businesses, along with plain ole boot leather will probably be your best bet... as usual!I will say, the Bishop area can be a little more difficult than other places to slay a coyote if you do not know exactly where (& when) to go. You can get coyotes just outside of town to howl back at your sounds, but could be very difficult to bring in the rest of the way to your stand. So I guess what I am trying to say is, that unless you just want a new adventure, which is always cool, you may have a better chance at actually slaying ole wiley at one of your existing hunting locations. But, hey, I was wrong once before... not to mention my opinion is worth exactly what you paid for. lol Good Luck on where ever you do decide to hunt... and take pics!

yes, i have encountered that group of hunters that was racist by making racist slurs. me as a good hunter id avoid the groups and just want to have a good time by enjoying a good hunt. guns can be dangerous out in the woods!

OOPS, sorry, I did not see you posted in the big game section and were talking about deer and bear. You could call the F&G office in Bishop on that. Also, X-9A and X-12 are the best zones in that area for deer hunting, with X-12 being my favorite and have hunted both since the late '60's long before the zone lottery system or x-12 existed. Good Luck

As far as encountering racist hunters your just as like to do that anywhere just don't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch for you. Since your geared for deer if you can draw that tag you should have a lot of fun there are huge bucks over there and if you put in the work you should be pretty successful. Bring some gas cans with you though cause gas is gonna be super expensive in town

Be very careful because if I'm not mistaken Bishop sits right on the border of two deer zones. Better make sure you're in the right one obviously. Which one were you planning on trying to draw for? As far as gas goes, I highly, highly recommend Fort Independence Travel Plaza for fuel. They are at the North end of Independence on the left (West) hand side. They always have the cheapest fuel in the valley, gas or diesel, you will see. http://www.ohmygas.c...CA-93526/121043Also, don't forget that there are two different herds of deer in that area. You have your typical herds in the mountains and foothills, but you also have some herds that live on the valley floor, usually by the river. Believe it or not those herds are there all year long. Just a thought in case you don't have much scouting success in the mountains, you may want to consider scouting the lower herds. There is also a nice DFG office in the middle of Bishop (right next to the creek that runs through town) that will being willing to help you.And as far as Bishop goes, just like any other town in the world, most don't mind strangers (different town or different race) and some do. I do know that the DO NOT like to have the Indians drinking in town though. Very rowdy tendencies. Also, you can't go to Bishop and not buy some of their delicious thick sliced bacon http://www.yelp.com/...-meats-bishop-2 or the also delicious sheepherder's bread http://www.erickschatsbakery.com/

See if they have a basque restaurant too if you like food with your garlic like I do. I don't remember if they have one or not but I know there is a lot of basqo sheep herders over around there.

Hey, PigHostile... What on earth happened in your past to make you so cautious about going to that town? Inquiring minds want to know. Seem a bit 'out there' but I'm sure there's more to the story.

I could be mistaken but I am pretty sure you have to be on the western slope to be in the d zones so it should be quite a drive from bishop

I'm going to take a SWAG and say from the spelling and grammar that PigHostile1 is by sight obviously from another country, and has in the past encountered some stereotypical redneck attitude. Hmong maybe?

If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing without a license, but not for being in the country illegally,… you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

That may be but if you use spelling and grammar as a criteria, this forum must be the flippin' United Nations! Sometimes racism is right where you go looking for it, too - just saying.

I was starting to think the same thing or at least of Asian descent because there are people who would stop and make comments to the hmongs in the woods. Most are harmless in my experience they are just misunderstood but there are those that leave their camps in ruins and people don't like that. Not saying pighostile would do that or that any other race wouldn't do that.

God's honest truth. "Big" Ed, the E in (what used to be) E&J's, a bar in Big Pine was a good friend of the family, and they actually had "Paiute Night" one day a week so that the Indians could come in and raise a little caine and not bother the regulars. You can't make this stuff up :signbummer8tl:

Bisley thanks for your advise you helped me alot know its my turn to find the public lication and do my homework. i will take a picture with there extra thick slice of bacons..if i harvest a trophy you will get a extra thick pack of bacon..hahaha

You are welcome. You are also making my mouth water :doh[1]: . I have been hunting and fishing just south of Bishop for over 25 years. And now that our family has two trailers in a mobile home park up there, we make more than a coiuple trips up there each month to check on the places and is why we are VERY familiar with the valley. Well, that, and my father and grandfather also used to hunt up there as young men, and my father eventually worked for DFG in that valley  .Also, one other thing to consider on the gas situation, if you have a Vons Grocery Store near you may want to look into one of those reward cards thingies. The Vons in Bishop has a gas station, and for every $100 you spend there during the month you receive 10 cents off their already fairly reasonable gas prices. But it is only good for 1 fill up and then you start all over again though. You may want to consider buying your food there before you leave just in case you do a lot of driving while scouting and have to fuel up while in town you can save some money without driving back to Independence (90 miles round trip). Just a thought, you may want to look into it.Good luck, and let us know how your scouting goes.
