I went threw a class with Bill Obrian I found in western outdoor news,I dont think hes still around but someone may have taken over, this is number 5 she seems to have a good nose so far,Im not saying im a dog trainer but ive trained 5 GSPs and all but one have been great the one shes more of a lap dog and its the only one I didnt pick with a feather and a fishing pole to see how birdy they were,if I can help with anything let me know.Attached File  5.jpg   14.94K   5 downloads

GSP's are great dogs.I've had a few during the years.More than a little hard headed but great dogs :roflmao3[1]: I'd look for anything by Delmar Smith. They are older books but the principle is still valid. His sons Rich and Ronny are both great trainers and have books/DVDs out too. They also put on training seminars I believe called HuntSmith.Of course asking who is the better trainer is sorta like asking what's the best caliber gun.You know what opinions are like...everyone's got one. :yahoo: Jim

They used to do that to check the birdyness in very young pups.(8-12 weeks).

I just got my first pointing dog last fall, a trained 3 yr old English Pointer from George Hickox. I've been to 2 of his classes when I was training my Lab and watched all that pointer stuff. After yrs of runnin a Lab I finally took the plunge. Wow! Amazing speed and endurance. I wanted to take one of the Smith's classes but just haven't had the opportunity. Either way, I'd highly recommend taking classes offered by pro's like the Smith's or Hickox very early in ownership. Also read books by these and other pros about how to select a pup and from what type of breeder. Picking a pup from a backyard breeder that has two dogs of the same kind is not as likely to get you a top performing dog. Finding a breeder that has a proven record of producing field trial champion dogs will go a long ways toward trainability and strong instincts to hunt. It took me over a month of calling around with personal references and leads to find what I was looking for. Do your homework. Don't scrimp on the money for the dog. If you did a good job of researching the purchase, it'll be the most valuable thing you do. I chose a started dog in one case and a finished dog in the other. The same things apply to trained dogs, maybe even more so.
