Hello,This is my first post. I have enjoyed reading all of your great stories and thought I would share one of mine.My son and I went out quail hunting on Saturday. On our first stop we found a nice covey and got 4 birds. We drove to another area and started our hunt there. We ended up walking and walking and walking. We didn't see a single bird. We were about ready to call it quits and I told my son that we would walk down one more gully and then head back to the truck. We walked another 150 yards and my son yells that he had seen several quail running ahead of us. We were immediately reenergized. We took off toward them and the dog started getting real birdie. She went on point and I got a nice easy going away shot. It was fast and furious for the next 15 minutes. We got several more birds and then we started searching for where they had flown off to. The dog worked really well and found several more birds for us. It was a great day of hunting.Attached File  4.jpg   23.29K   8 downloads

Any day spent hunting with your son has to be a great day, but birds in the vest only add to that experience. Nice going, and way to to get the kid(s) out :hellohello9il: . And it never ceases to amaze me that no matter how tired we are, or how far our tongue is hanging out from exhaustion, we forget about all that and feel 18 again at the sight or sound of birds. That thrill never grows old.

Congrats on a great end of season hunt. You did Great... on both birds AND taking your son!As Bob stated, one of, if not theeee greatest sounds in nature is a covey of quail taking off... and surviving a (near) heart attack if they do it by your feet. lol :hellohello9il: :hellohello9il:

Thank you for sharing. It's great you were able to share such an experience with your son. These are the times you both will remember and cherish as time goes on.

First off, I am so sorry I forgot to say welcome here on Sunday. We celebrated a birthday and a graduation that day, and I was a little shall we say "hydrated", thus I didn't catch that it was your first post. So welcome here :censored[1]: . Now, if you don't mind my asking, how old is your son, and how long have you been hunting together? I ask because we have a crop of new (young) hunters this year, and it is great to see and hear about. Plus, it's always nice to know a little about our fellow members here, especially all those teaching the young ones. And what shotguns you got there? Who is on the pump and who is on the SxS? And how can you forget a pic pf Fido? :two-cents: Inquiring minds want to know the whole story :roflmao3[1]:

Thank you for the welcome, Bisley. My son is 27, and he has been hunting with me since he was 11 years old. The pump is my 20 gauge Ithaca model 37 featherlight. I bought it with my paper route money 37 years ago. My son uses the 20 gauge side by side that was my father's. It must be over 60 years old. Dad passed away 3 years ago. When I read your story about Chukar hunting with your dad and son it made me miss my dad. It would have been great to call him and tell him about the hunt when we got home.

Very nice, 16 years of hunting together, that is great. Good job on starting him young. A 37 year old Ithaca huh, very, very nice. I was given an 80's vintage 12ga Ithaca Featherweight over 10 years ago by a co-worker. That thing is smooth as ball bearings. I bet that 20ga is easy to carry and nimble too. And I love to hear stories about guns like the SxS being passed down through the family. It don't get no better than that. And I am very sorry about your dad. I am dreading the day I have to go through that :smiley-innocent-halo-yellow: . But he must have done something right, and I bet he would have smiled ear to ear hearing about that hunt.

Yes, dad would have been very happy to hear about our hunt. He started taking me hunting at a young age and I got my license when I turned 10. Hopefully my oldest son will start hunting with us again. I think he is interested in hunting after hearing about our quail season this year. It is thanks to you on this site that I have explored the Carrizo Plain and surrounding areas this year for the first time. I had never heard of it before. It is definitely worth the 2 hour drive. Maybe next year I will try Tehachapi and some of the desert areas. I have never hunted Chukar, so I might give that a try too.
