i have been looking for a safe and found a bighorn at costco it looks good and is what i am looking for does any ony have any experience with them? thanks!

Two things I don't like about the Bighorn - first and foremost is the exposed hinges. Big security flaw there... Second is the size. At only 26 inches wide you will run out of room at a rapid rate. But that said - If you dont have much to put in it, this safe is better than no safe.Costco's Cannon deal last year was the best - I paid only slightly more for twice the safe.

The Cannon goes on sale from time to time at Costco. But you can also get them from Tractor Supply Company for sale prices.

I bought a Winchester safe from Costco a few years ago, and am real happy with it, other than the electronic keypad. Everytime I went to open it the battery was dead. I didn't use the safe alot, and by the time I contacted the manufacturer about it, the warranty was up. They wanted $75 to extend my warranty and send me a new keypad. I told them no thanks. I made an adapter out of an old cordless phone charger, and don't use batteries anymore. I never did contact Costco about it. I know they don't sell that brand anymore. I'm not sure about the whole electronic keypad thing. Google Bighorn safes, and read about the manufacturer. I've heard Costco stands behind everything they sell. Good luck.My Winchester has exposed hinges, but I don't think thats a big deal, because it also has door bolts on all four sides of the door. You could cut the hinges off, and still not be able to open the door.

I would worry more about keeping the safe inside the house built into a closet with a good home alarm system. That way your typical dirt bag doesn't open it like a sardine can with a demolition saw. Also non supported dead bolts can be defeated relatively easy with a large pinch bar. Make sure to securely bolt down your safe so that they just don't take it and open it at their leisure. That might sound far fetched but it is amazing how determined the criminal element can be.

I thought I would add this to show how easy it is to get into the thinner safes with unsupported locking bolts. This is why you want them very securely bolted down in a confined space. http://www.youtube.c...v=nBhO­jWHb­D6MI'm not saying to not buy these safes just put some time into securing and perhaps adding some additional protection.

Try this site for some good info on safes in general, yes they are selling their safes, but lots of good info. I have bought four safes from them and they are great to deal with and make a good product. As mentioned above, buy the largest you can afford and secure it to the floor. Exposed hinges are not a problem if the internal bolts are re-enforced. The site is sturdysafe.com they are located in Fresno.Matt

I have a problem skimping on a safe,You buy one to keep your guns and non replacable valuables from thiefs, and fire.I got the Browning copper, I don't have to worry about anything. It's like putting $10. brakes on a $50 thousand dollar truck, It just dosen't make any sence.Tom

Sturdy Safes are some of the thicker safes out there with a 7 gauge wall thickness and a 5/16 inch door. The Browning copper only has a 12 guage body and 3/16” door plate.

THIS is the Cannon safe I got. I would consider it the minimum quality safe to get. Get a safe bigger than you think you need, and be sure to lag whatever you get down solid.

I'm still looking for a good, solid, sturdy, fire proof safe, thick walls and can be bolted down securly. Don't think I'll need room for more then a shotgun, rifle, compound bow, and two pistols. Anyone selling anything for good deal?

I am about to buy a safe so I've been shopping. Costco safes look great, but when I read the specs, the fire rating seems very low. This is important to me because I live in a rural area. If my house catches on fire, the fire rating on my safe will really matter. Am I reading something wrong? Thoughts?

The old adage still applies to buying a gun safe. You get what you pay for so the more you pay the better the rating are.
