Well, if the winds will cooperate, I think that I'll try to shoot my 22.250 at the Cuyama 1,000 yard match this month. Actually the match will be a modified Palma with 15 rounds at 800 yard, 15 at 900 and 15 at 1,000 yards.I've got a heavily modified Savage 11 with a 26", 10" twist, three groove PacNor SuperMatch barrel: (Middle gun below)I just tested the 69 grain Sierra SMK with IMR4064 powder and got the groups below: I chrongraphed the 33.7 grain load at 3,340 fps which JBM says will still be supersonic at 2,300 feet of elevation if the temperature stays above about 40 degrees. A 5 MPH wind will move it 56 inches though. Ouch!

Frank, Man I've got to hand it to you. 22-250 at 1K! You have to take that rifle to Palmdale to show those guys shooting big boomers how it's done.

That's an old Weaver V24, the upper gun has Nightforce 5.5-22X and the lower gun has a Laupold 6.5-20X

That sounds like alot of fun! I sure wish they'd quicken the standard twist rate for the .22-250. My rifle is unbelievably accurate for an off the rack gun but it would be so more useful if it didn't have that slow fourteen inch twist.

Sure is a long ways away for the 69 grain SMK. Using the 2300 ASL, temperature of 70 degrees, 25% RH and 29.87" barometric pressure, the 69 SMK will be in the transonic region by the time it cross the 1000 yards mark, according to Ballistic FTE program. In a 5 MPH wind, the bullet will drift 66.18" (6.32 MOA) and a trajectory drop of 340.76"(32.54 MOA) when zeroed at 100 yards.If it's me shooting the 22-250, my bullet of choice will be the Berger 90 grain VLD with a BC of .552. Let's look at the number using the same environmental conditions but reducing the velocity to around 3000 fps. 1. At 1000 yards, the 90 grain Berger VLD will dropped 261.98" (25.02 MOA), 78.88" less than the 69. 2. In a 5 MPH wind, the bullet will drift 32.69" (3.12 MOA), about half that of the 69 grain SMK. 3. The biggest advantage the 90 grain Berger had over the 69 SMK is that, it will remain supersonic up to 1550 yards whereas the 69 SMK will max at 950 yards.

Hey Clamp Daddy:Can't agree with you more about faster "stock" twist rates.I have a Remy 700 (1980's) in 6mm. I have been able to guess that it has a 1 in 9 twist rate...am I close to the truth?Didn't Remy drop the 243 with a 1 in 14 twist rate and then rename it the 6mm with a 1 in 9 rate? Do I have fog between my ears?Always open to better information.

Remington changed the name of the 244 Remington to the 6mm Remington and changed the twist from 1:12" to 1:9".

Put a bronze brush on your cleaning rod, and pass it through the bore. on your return draw as soon as the brush is in the rifling (rod starts to turn), make a "T" mark with a marker on the rod. Cross of the T flush with muzzle or bolt opening arches, and the line of the T at the 12 o'clock. now slowly pull until the the line of the T is again at 12 o'clock and then measure from the cross of the T to where the T started, and round to the nearest inch (or half inch). That will tell you pretty much what your twist is. And I feel many of yours' pain - I have a sweet old Savage 99 in .250 Savage that regretfully has the 1:14" twist. HOT 100gr loads (on a good day), or 87 grainers is about it.

It depends on your recoil tolerence. The 50 BMG and 338 Lapua are great if you don't mind a big muzzle brake and heavier recoil. My 6.5x284 seems to be a great compromise recoil wise with the great .264 diameter bullets that buck the wind so well. On less windy days I'll shoot a fast twist 243 and even my 22.250.

Is there an ideal round for target shooting at 1,000 yards?

The 2011 overall combine winner at our bi-monthly 1K shoot, at the Desert Marksman in Palmdale, was shooting 6.5-47 Lapua but later switched to 260 Remington. That tells you that you don't need a big boomer to shoot 1000 yards. I'm still going to use my 338 Lapua Ackley but I have my 6.5-47 Lapua on standby on days when wind is not going to be the factor.
