Anyone been there lately? I was there 2months ago and it was bone dry. My friend and i live in Valencia and are going on a 2 day trip. Also will do some coyote stands as well. Anyone know of a place comparatively close to Carrizo from Santa Clarita that will yield better? Not asking for specifics-- Hows the success at Frazier lately?

I saw a jackrabbit the last time I was at carrizo but no cottontail, I was hunting 10 minutes before sun up until about 1PM. I haven't been around the fraizer park area lately but I always get a cottontail or two when I go. I'm not sure where it is allowed but you're right next to the Angeles National Forest. I've also been to the high desert area and have seen jacks, cottontails, a coyote (which I know nothing about) and some upland game birds.Maybe we can meet up sometime.

Chase I'm sorry to report that I was out there this last September and saw only one cotton tail. I did see one coyote as I was walking about. It was going about Mach 3 as it ran from one side of the valley to the other.

True2thyself-- Cool yeah when I heal up from this surgery we could meet up for something. Im still trying to find local honey holes and I know all the laws and whatnot for my area (specifically no rifle/pistol hunting of rabbits or squirrels in LA county).Mackeral thanks for the report. I was there in September as well and had similar results except I saw plenty of foxes and quails then too. im gonna get my upland game stamp so i can get some of those guys if the opportunity presents itself again....thats all i need for the non waterfowl, right?

Chase, An upland game stamp should cover you on the quail. I'm not real up on the whole non lead issue and hunting quail. When it first came out it I know it did not apply to game birds but I thought I read somewhere that you now have to use non lead shot. Check the F&G regs to be sure as I know Carizzo is in the non lead zone.

Yeah you have to use Non lead for everything in a firearm except for rimfires and air rifles (as pellet rifles are not considered firearms in our state)

Non lead in rimfires too in the condor zone.

You're gonna make me look it up, aren't ya? >=)In addition to those conditions provided for in sections 353 and 475, only centerfire rifle, centerfire pistol, muzzleloading, shotgun slug, and rimfire ammunition using projectiles certified pursuant to this section as containing no lead (as defined by subsection 353(h)) shall be used for the taking of big game and nongame birds and nongame mammals in condor range (see subsection 353(h))353 Is about big game. and 475 is about nongame birds/mammals.You are allowed to use lead ammunition to take jack rabbits, cotton tails, and tree squirrels. There is an addition letter from DFG clarifying that you may use lead ammunition on small game, but I can not find it. I much prefer the $0.02 per shot for lead than the $0.10 for tin .22lr.

You are correct, but if you shoot ground squirrels or anything you leave lay you need non lead.

I wonder if you take it with you if you could use lead on ground squirrels

No because the law specifically says non lead for non game in the condor zone.

So if you are carrying a .22 then carry some tin 10 cent bullets in case a ground grizzly pops up that you can't resist. If you are at Carrizo remember those ground squirrels with stripes on them earn you at least a ticket if not a comfy room with bars for your security.

Tony I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say (head is fuzzy, just had my first real night of sleep in 3 days), but I always bring my mossberg 500 12g with assorted shells for various situations. And those are always steel shot anyway as they pattern better than lead anyway.

Iamchase,

The ground squirrels at Carrizo with the stripes are a NO-NO. Protected!!! Do not collect $200. Go to jail.

Was that clear?

Probably trying to outrun one of Frank's 4,600 fps bullets.
