sportyg,Contact local LE to report missing gun ASAP before it is used in a crime. The local LE could already have the gun if it was found by a Good Guy? Best of luck in the recovery of the gun.

Depends what he thinks is a fair finders fee. I think a thank you is finders fee enough. Otherwise take the Sheriff with you and have him arrested for theft as the gun isn't registered to him and he has it illegally. How did he contact your friend? That shotgun would still have been there had he not snatched it. I'm the wrong guy to ask because I would be grateful had he returned it or turned it in. But he's chosen to be a scumbag and needs to be dealt with. My neighbor had her dog taken and was later contacted wanting $500 for it's return. Lets just say she was lucky and got her dog back without having to pay.

BS on the finders fee, especially if it is fellow hunter. If I found a gun on the road or field I would pick it up( to assure it doesn't get stolen or kids play with it) but I would gladly take it to the nearest check station/police station. Throwing out a finders fee is like extortion.

Pure garbage! I would setup a meeting and agree to whatever he wants, get what car he's in and try and have Leo approach first. Good luck with this scumbag!

Yikes! That might get him a charge of filing a false police report then both guys are in trouble and the shotgun might be held as evidence. Keep it simple. I like the idea of bringing the cops to meet the guy who insists on a reward (ransom) payment. Ask the cops to provide what they call a "civil stand-by". Since there was some carelessness involved in leaving the shotgun behind in the first place, a reasonable reward isn't out of the question but NOT when it sounds like an extortion demand.

That's called a ransom, not a finders fee. And it's called a thief, not a fellow hunter - also a jackass. The only reason he picked that shotgun up in the first place is because the thought of monetary gain popped into his head.
