i see these often for only bit over 100 bucks, i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them. the ammo seems a little hard to find, but i really want to know if they have any reliability issues or lack knockdown power. thanks for any responses

They are pretty reliable from what ive heard. the 7.62x54r is ABOUT the same as a .308. The 91/30 are really long looking to me though. There is a great website for them 7.62x54r.net lots of info on dating, condition, maintinance, and some problems like the sticky bolt from the cosmoline.

They are a stout battle proven rifle. and accurate. recently some magasine writers got together to try and recreate some of the more mythical long shots of history. using WWII rifles and ammo they tried their best at 1000 yd shots. the only rack grade rifles that could concistantly do it were the 91 30s. some of the best mosins were made right here in the USA. AT Stevens, Savage, and Remington provided millions of them to the russian government. the mosin that the russians prised as target rifles tho were made in Finnland in the Sako plant. not only did Sako make a great barrel but they also used a more refined sight. they are worth a premium if you can find them. alot of what you see for less than $100 are rebuilds. these are great shooters. they were rebarreled and refinished. just like the mausers, sks, rolling blocks, and trapdoors the prices will rise quickly when the importers run out. this is one of those get a few now kind of rifles. Mil surplus ammo is very easy to find and cheap by todays standards. The guns are generally ok. They would not be my choice for hunting but are fun to play with. I have several for range toys. You can buy them for $100 or less.

Just buy one, they are fun and inexpensive. I see people talk like they will be 100 bucks forever and that's simply not true. Sure, they made millions of them, but there is a finite number that were made (and less than that are imported). So get one (or 7) while you can get them cheap. :two-cents:

I have one with an unusually nice trigger I'll sell and a buncha ammo, just to make room in my safe. They're lots of fun, a true good tough inexpensive boomer. They don't recoil as bad as a lot of people say. See J&G Sales for ammo. Suplus ammo may or may not be accurate, but you can reload accurately for 'em.
