"(g) In addition to the methods listed in (a), (, ©, (d), (e), and (f) above, firearm rifles and pistols may be used for taking rabbits and squirrels only; except in Los Angeles County where rifles and pistols may not be used;"Does anyone know for sure if the "riles and pistols may not be used" only pertains to firearms or does it also include air guns?

As has been said more than once, only a foolish person puts their fate in the hands of folks they don't really know on an internet forum. Do yourself a favor and go talk to the local sheriff and local DFG. That is the only way you can know for sure. Remember, if the folks here are wrong, it's you that has to live with the possible felony, not them. But take this comment for what it's worth, as I'm just another one of those anonymous folks on the internet who don't know you and don't really care if you are convicted of a felony or not. Doesn't really affect me one way or the other. ;)

Problem with this is even the local sherrif and ranger office both didn't know. The sherrif didn't even know that small game hunting was allowed in the la forest... And the ranger office guy was unsure but said he thinks it's firearm rifle only and no shotgun or bb.... :653: So I'm vry confused, I just want to go get a rabbit or two for dinner tonight but I cantfind clarification.... I don't fell comfortable even if it is legal because I feel I will be harassed by the stupid sherrifs anyhow....

No other LEO's beside DFG Wardens know SQUAT about hunting. You are pretty much wasting your time by calling anyone but DFG with any hunting questions.

I agree with DD, on checking with DFGI disagree with DD on section (f) because they use the following terms:Air rifles firing pellets and powered by compressed air or gas and firearm rifles and pistols for taking rabbits and squirrels, except in Los Angeles County, in addition to the methods listed in (a), (, ©, (d) and (e) above.CALIFORNIA 11- 12 Mammal Hunting Regulations BookletEffective July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012311. Methods Authorized for Taking Resident Small Game.Only the following may be used to take resident small game:(A) Shotguns 10 gauge or smaller using shot shells only and incapable of holding more than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined. If a plug is used to reduce the capacity of a magazine to fulfill the requirements of this section, the plug must be of one piece construction incapable of removal without disassembling the gun;(:roflmao3[1]: Shotgun shells may not be used or possessed that contain shot size larger than No. BB, except that shot size larger than No. 2 may not be used or possessed when taking wild turkey. All shot shall be loose in the shell.© Muzzle‑loading shotguns;(D) Falconry;(E) Bow and arrow (see Section 354 for archery equipment regulations);(F) Air rifles firing pellets and powered by compressed air or gas (0.20 caliber minimum for taking wild turkey); and firearm rifles and pistols for taking rabbits and squirrels, except in Los Angeles County, in addition to the methods listed in (a), (, ©, (d) and (e) above.(G) In San Diego and Orange counties only, rabbits may be taken at any time during the open season by means of box traps. Such traps shall not exceed 24 inches in any dimension, shall be tended at least once every 24 hours, and shall show the name and address of the trap owner. All rabbits taken under this section shall be immediately kil

I'm awaiting a call from the warden, but reading that makes it sound like there is pretty much no small game hunting allowed in la.... I'm hoping this isn't true... And I'm just reading it wrong...

It seems that the "Mammal Hunting Regulations Booklet (PDF)" and the "11-12 Booklet of Upland Game Bird and Waterfowl Hunting Regulations; Regulations for Public Lands (PDF)" do not have the same exact wording with regards to "311. Methods Authorized for Taking Resident Small Game."

I live in Ventura County but I don't know where I can hunt so I typically go to the Fraizer park area for rabbits.

The area I hunt near Fraizer Park is in Ventura County so I would presume it is legal to use an air rifle.

I was able to talk to a DFG guy yesterday and what I got out of it was that it would be better not to use one in Los Angeles County. The mammal regs, as screwwork pointed out, seem to indicate that it is not permissible while the upland game regs seem to indicate that it is. I would prefer to be better safe than sorry.
