Has anyone been out to Carrizo recently? I've been twice but I've only seen two Jacks and one cottontail (all from the car). I was hiking for nearly 4 hours on Saturday but didn't a single rabbit. It looks pretty dry out there. Has anyone had a different experience? It looks like I'll have to go back to the Fraizer park area for bunnies unless someone knows of another region I can scout =D.

Exactly why i am checking in here, I haven't done any hunting for about three years (long story)my friend was out there last weekend and he said that he didn't see a single rabbit of any kind. Last time i was out there you couldn'tnot see one, wondering what's going on, disease maybe?

Is that from your experience at Carrizo lately?I was out for the quail opener before the sun came up and I only saw one cottontail that day. In the weeks prior to that when I was scouting for quail I hadn't seen much either. Hopefully the rain that we had yesterday (and hopefully more this season) greens things up and brings up the population for next season.

I certainly hope the population increases a little. CBR400RR and I went out near there this last Saturday (11/5/2011) and granted, it had snowed so I wasn't sure if we'd see anything. It was deader than dead, cold and windy to boot. We walked all over a good patch of ground and only saw some blue jays and finch like birds. Other than that, the only other signs of animal life I saw were some well traveled small game trails in the grasses leading to brush and some droppings that looked like deer droppings. I was at least expecting to see something of a Jack Rabbit, Cottontail or Quail. I guess I'll have to check back when the weather is a little warmer up there.

I just got back from Carrizo. I bagged my first Jack. I saw a few more, but wasn't able to raise up fast enough to get them. I did manage to get one quail also. I am getting better at small game hunting, but I really need to work on my shooting. I went through almost two boxes of shells. Any advice on how to cook the Jack?Posted ImageThe last post was of my wife holding the quail I got today. Here is a pic of the Jack.Posted ImageI know it isn't much of a harvest, but I am happy with it.

Hey, that's an awesome job! You went out there and stuck to it and got a quail and a jack rabbit. I think that's a pretty successful day because you didn't get skunked. :smiley-innocent-halo-yellow: Nice shooting (except for it taking so many shots :D )
