I've been really busy all spring and summer and barely had time to check in on you guys now and then but come September 1st my schedule changes course.I headed to Alaska for a much anticipated moose hunt with my brother who lives near Big Lake, north of Anchorage. He owns a cabin deep in the interior which requires a five hour boat ride to reach. He had everything 100% ready to go when I stepped off the plane so we left his house at 4am the next morning. A 6 hour drive put us at the boat ramp and we headed out in his Wooldridge 21 footer with a 140hp outboard. After a 5 hour tug and pull off a sand bar we were at the cabin and settled in by 9pm. The country is spectacular, nothing like anywhere I've been before. Moose are not by any means dense in this area and at one point I had seen more grizzlies than moose. It took six days before we finally lucked into a bull and it turned out to be the only bull we would see. I confirmed that they are not bullet proof and my Sako .280 with a Barnes 160gr 'X' bullet put him down so fast he raised a cloud of dust. These things are immense! I knew they were big but I had no idea how really huge they are until I crawled inside it. I think a large bull elk would fit inside there too. I had three opportunities to go fishing and caught a limit of grayling, next an 8lb silver salmon and then some pike out of the lake the cabin sits next to. I'll attach a few pics of bullwinkle and one with my brother standing next to the carcass for size reference. I'll post some more scenery pics and such as I get them uploaded.Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Thats great! Congrats on a good looking Moose. Alaska is a dream hunt of mine. Been wanting to fish there too. You must have a few coolers of meat from that massive animal.

When I skinned the skull out I noticed a bump on his forehead that had an old infection going and I assumed he had been gored by the brow tines of another moose but when I cut it open.... WOW!! There was a broken tooth in there! Probably wolf but I guess it could be a bear. Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Thats just too cool . congrats on a awsome hunt. Thats just a wee bit bigger than our blacktails. Great pictures.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Thanks guys. I made it home with about 130lbs of backstraps and choice ham pieces, the rest stayed in my brothers freezer and since he has two teenage sons I doubt much will be left when I go back in July. :)Here's a few more pics:GraylingPosted ImageHeaded down a slough in a canoe!Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Correct, in the neck. He was close and I didn't want him to make it into the water. I had to wait a minute or so until he gave me a good broadside shot at his neck and it would normally seem impossible to miss at 25 yards because it's the size of a garbage can but I don't ever remember being so nervous shooting a big game animal. I had buck fever to equal his size. He hit the ground like a tree falling and blood gushed out by the gallons.Posted Image

I have one of those chainsaw winches but it has never hauled any animal that size. It pulled my jeep a few times. I can't say enough about all of the great pictures. ;)

I was wondering just how far you were from your truck or your quad. Seems like some extra tools involved to have to go back for after the kill.

Truck? Quad? The truck was 5 hours away, the only methods of transportation in that area is boat or plane. :sport037fn4:

Well I guess I should rephrase my question then. How far did you have to haul the moose to your transportation? I know you winched it after the kill shot, but how far did you winch it and how far were you from the boat or plane?
