Got my rifle sighted in Thursday after missing a nice coyote last weekend at 50 yards with it. Now I am confident in it up to 300 easy. Yesterday I headed up to the mountains, got there about 4:00 PM. Started driving on dirt roads until I found a promising looking area. Right before sundown I see a black bear cross the road in front of me. About a mile later I see two big does cross. Both the bear and the does were headed up the same ridge. Early this morning I get up go on the downside of the ridge (across the road) where the does came FROM. About 9:30 the does cross back over in front of me about 75 yards. Five minutes later this guy shows up. The shot was about 3 inches too far back but I managed to get one lung and the stomach was blown to bits :D Quartering towards me at 50 yards. He takes about 10 steps and drops. I know he is nothing special to most of you guys but he is my first Blacktail as I am from Oklahoma and this is my first season here. He definitely IS a trophy to me :D I'll be back there next weekend for sure! :D Posted ImagePosted Image

Haha thanks :D And yes I did find my way out of the desert, unfortunately it is about a 150 mile round trip to that spot...Or I would be back up there tomorrow morning lol. 12 miles to the gallon...I can't afford TWO trips a weekend.

Very nice report and pictures. Congrats on your buck. I've already had tag soup with my A Zone tag. Still trying to avoid having my B Zone tag for dessert!!

Congrats on your first Black Tail. Although not as big as mule deer or whitetail, they are as hard to hunt and score on as any other deer in my books. I have grown to respect their crafty ways in the woods. I think the more a person hunts them the more they respect them. Congrats again.

Congrats on getting your deer Kalvin, but I don't recall seeing anything about your coyote encounter. One of the rules on this site is you have to tell the story even when you miss.

Nice buck. Great getting one first time out here hunting them. Now what about that coyote.?
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.
