I am also constantly working on survival skills. Hunted as a boy for squirrel, rabbit and some upland birds. I am a farmer by trade and I work for an organic farm founded on ethical work practices.

It has been looking great at all of my spots as well. The ca quail are all over my ranches as well. I can't take a proper walk without flushing a covey every 50 yards or so. Cant wait till I get to start walking with my 12 ga!! Good luck they year everyone!

Now thats a nice bunch of chukar lenny. I'll be chasing them somewhere in kern this year, and my quail spots are in kern to. Always a great time when we go, most of us get limits of quail pretty quick and start chasing chukar but those are a bit harder to hunt.

I would hunt first but guys hammer them close to where I go on the opener,so I end up hunting them during the week since we always spend a few days up there. And our quail spot is over looked by everyone since it looks like its private land but its not :) so we get to do some good hunting all alone.

I went out scouting on Sept-10 and it was the first time I've seen Chukar. There were a few small groups but probably 40 or so birds that day.Posted Image

Sure. Find the steepest, nastiest, meanest terrain you can at above 4,000 for so. If you look up and say "There's not enough money in the world to make me go up that", you're at the right spot. Think high desert, like Mojave or Nevada.

You are not totally wrong, as they do live in the same places as some quail. As anything else, nothing is set in stone. On the rare occasion I have seen chukar in lower elevations, but very rarely. They are a high desert/low mountain bird by nature. But chukar are much smarter than their little cousin (quail). They like to fly even less than quail (since being in the air is a high risk), and they seem to stay on or near the hills. That is because they are smart enough to know you can not catch them going up the mountain. You can try, but save one round to kill YOURSELF with after you're done. Best bet (when possible) is to always work them from the top of the hill down. Also look for them just below where the desert meets the trees, and for some God awful reason, they love that rassin frassin goddam f@%^ing lava rock. You know, the stuff that you can barely walk on without killing yourself or your shoes, but they seem to skate right through it effortlessly stuff! Damn bastard Devil birds anyways.Good luck if you do try. It's actually a lot more fun than I make it sound, so I'm told :yikes[1]:
