Went out again to los padres north of pozo. 3 does and 4 spikes (also one bear) but no forked bucks. This is getting frustrating. Am i doing something wrong here?

Unfortunately that's why it's called hunting.

I spent 3 days in the B zone west of Willows. Saw 5 does, 5 fawns, 1 spike and 350 road hunters. I tell my wife I'm going hunting and she says "have fun camping".

I refer to it as hiking with guns. I know hunting isnt supposed to be easy but even my buddies are reporting a good amount of spikes.

You are on the deer. It did take a buck along with that doe to make a spike. Just be patient and keep doing what you are doing. Your armed hiking adventures will turn into something soon.

I'm just going to keep updating this thread instead of a new one. Went out again to the same area. 15 to 20 degrees cooler, and for some reason all i saw all day was 1 doe and 1 spike from last time.(ive decided to name him Duumass). Also saw one cottontail at the start of the hunt and one as i was walking back. Decided to get the 2nd one with my .270 win. What was left of the fur i currently have sitting in salt. Anyone in San Luis Obispo county having any luck this season?

Hey ajromo. I'm new to the forum and relatively new to deer hunting as well, but I have been hunting los padres around pozo same as you with the same result. I've seen 6 or 7 does and 2 spikes. Driving back one night I had a forky run in front of my car so I guess they are out there

Went out again this morning.Saw a few does and rabbits. Strangely enough Dumass the spike i normally see didnt make his usual 10am appearance. Decided to break down and buy a deer call, and predator call back in town. Going back to north of Pozo around 430pm. Hopefully the dirt bikers had gotten hungry and left by then.

Yep - I also call it "Camping with a bow". I'd say the biggest mistake is trying to hunt in California! I really don't bother anymore, and when I do, I pick my location to pack in at least 12 miles from the nearest road for a little peace and solitude.

If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing without a license, but not for being in the country illegally,… you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

For the most part down here I think it is still too warm for the big guys to come down. They like to stay cool.

Just put in for the draw every year and wait until you get about 5 points, then apply for whatever awesome zone you want, if you don't get it, try again next year. It sucks to hunt deer here for those of us not willing to "pay" for a hunt.I'd be all for your bunny idea at this point. Good meat in the freezer.

I save the heads, and if theres anything left the fur. doesnt usually happen much using a .270 win on the guys though. I'm debating between getting a shotgun or a .22. I could use the .22 on the rabbits. Yet theres TOOOOONS of game birds north of pozo, so the shotgun would pay for it self first season.

For me every hunt is a good one, regardless of what is or isn't in the bag. Learn something from each trip and always remember aside from doing your homework and being in the right place hunting is always a certain amount of luck. Work on your tracking/sign skills, take time to enjoy where you are and relax, take in everything around you the sounds and smells. Frustration will generally not yield positive results. Time in the field can only be replaced with lots of money and a good guide :smiley-sorry:

to me a " bad / poor " hunting trip =s a scouting trip . I am thinking about trying for deer myself . The only thing is that I see them everywhere out of season , then during the season , they put on camo & hide alllll day . Largest buck I ever saw was 2 years ago and almost hit it with the car . 4X4 min . HUGE body too . The last I saw killed was a fork taken on PP in SLO . Andy
