Switched the barrel on the big girl to give my shoulder a rest. The 30" Broughton weigh more than the 338 barrel, so no brakes is needed. I'm hoping to get 3000 fps with about 66.5 grains of Reloader 25. I sorted 150 pieces of brass by weight and began load development. I crafted 3 sets of 5 cartridge loaded with 65.5, 66.0 and 66.5 of Reloader 25 respectively. I'll get it chrono this weekend and see what kind of groups and velocity I'm gonna get.The sorted brass average 230 - 233 grainsNeck thickness average .015-.017Measured the runout of the loaded round. Averaging .003 - .005. This would tighten up after first firing. COAL is 3.195 barely kissing the land. side by side comparison with 6.5 -284 on the left and 338 Lapua Ackley on the right

That looks like Winchester brass, if it is how much variation do you get when weighing the cases?I have a bunch of these in .243 and I thought I should start sorting them out by weight to get more consistency?

Thanks, that good info... my dillema is do I buy 100 Lapua cases where they are all supposed to be the same weight, or three bags of Winchester to get 100 or so cases that all weigh the same.

Still you will find weight variations with Lapua brass, although at a much lower percentage. What really separate it from other brand of brass is it's very uniform wall thickness and it's toughness. Lapua manufacturing process has a much tighter tolerance therefore needing less case prep. If Lapua makes 7WSM brass, I won't bother with Winchester.

Well, Here's the result from yesterday trip to the range. As expected the rifle shoot really well. Started with 65.5 grains of Reloader 25. First shot on a clean barrel reads 2935.8 and lands about 2 mils lower than my 338 zero. I left it at that and proceeded to shoot the last 4. The velocity went above 3K on the next 4 shot and all clustered together below the first shot. Pressure seems on the upper limit but nothing unusual. I went ahead and cleaned the rifle and proceeded to shoot the next 5 rounds loaded with 66 grains The first shot again went high and the velocity went up around 3038 fps. The next 4 landed about an inch low but clustered together with an average velocity of around 3046 fps. The brass showed sign of pressure on this one. I can see a slight extractor mark on the case head. The rifle still shoot's tight however. I didn't bother to shoot the remaining five loaded with 66.5 grains since I already found my load.Here's a few pictures from this afternoon shoot.

Comparing the ballistic performance of the 338 Ackley against the 7 WSM. Using the excellent JBM ballistic program I plotted the trajectory of both cartridge at Desert Marksman ASL. I have a Mod 70 Classic that I had re barreled with a 26" Brux 9" twist #4 contour. Yesterday in the hot NV desert I was able to hit Water filled Rock Star cans starting at 250 yds,450 yds and then 620yds. Love that caliber. My load was 65.5grs of Re#22 behind a Hornady 162gr A-Max produced avg of 3,150. 4 shots and my barrel is cooking. ........ How far were you shooting,and what scope is that ?

Haven't gone beyond 250 yards yet. I'm getting this rifle ready for my 1K shoot at the end of the month.Here's the 3 shot group at 250 yards

Measured the runout of the loaded round. Averaging .003 - .005. This would tighten up after first firing. COAL is 3.195 barely kissing the land.

Nice rig.. Long action with a COAL of 3.195 i take it?

It's a Lawton 7500, a Remington knock off but a bit beefier.Switching to Sierra 180 grain SMK. My last competition using the 180 grain Berger VLD was a total disaster... finished last. Seven bullet blew up in mid air and never got to the target for no score. Berger amended by sending UPS to pick up the rest of the offending bullets, 390 in all, and dropped 5 boxes replacement bullet. Berger think they accidentally mixed hunting bullet with their target bullet. I had my doubt.

Wow, I didnt think they were having issues with them coming apart at those speeds, I know the .338 bullets they were having issues with over 3000fps but I hadnt heard anything about the 7mm bullets. At least they have good customer service but thats a bummer. Knock on wood, but I have yet to have a .264 coem apart, but I am only pushing it in the mid 2800's...

No issue with my 6.5-284 either. My velocity is around 2975 fps from a 26 inch 8 twist Lothar Walther barrel.I hope this is just a fluke. I really like Berger but I can't go wrong with 180 SMK either.Here's SMK 5 shot group at 110 yards. The velocity is around 3,000 fps.
