Nice. Those are monsters, especially compared to the dinky little .204 Ruger bullets I've been loading lately. Good luck with them. Look forward to the pictures and stories.

Two weeks from tonight I board a United flight out of LAX and start 25+ hours of flight time to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. I'll sstay overnight there in town and the next day we drive 7+ hours to the Omay (South) conservation area in the Zambezi Valley where I'll spend the next nine days chasing Buffalo.

That is awesome! Tell me more about the cape buffalo and how you hunt it... isn't that supposed to be one of the most dangerous animals to hunt?

Since I'll be hunting over 1,000,000 acres we'll travel the roads and boundary areas in an open truck until tracks are spotted, then the PH and trackers will decide if the tracks belong to a group of old Dagga boys (the old bulls that have have been kicked out of the herd tend to form small bachelor groups of 3-6). If the trackers think that the tracks are what we're looking for then you load up with the guns and backpacks of gear and start following the tracks to walk the bulls down. This can vary from a few hundred yards to a few miles depending upon how fresh the tracks are and whether the animals are feeding along or traveling to water or shelter. After you get to where you find the animals, you try to get inside 50 yards to identify all the bulls and see if there is a trophy head in the group. A lot of times you stalk different groups for days without finding the trophy that you want and sometimes you find it on the first try. Then you just have to put a heavy bullet in the right place. Buffs only kill about 3-4 hunters or PHs every year so there are more dangerous animals to hunt.

I can't wait to get going on this trip but I just found out that my PH, Martin Pieters' wife had to go in the hospital in South Africa for emergency surgery so he's scrambling to find another PH to go with me if she doesn't get out in time. I told him not to worry about the hunt and concentrate on his wife for now. I can get along with just about any PH as long as we establish some ground rules first.
