Just got my new Savage 10 22-250 max 1 . It comes from the factory with weaver mounts installed. I secured the new rings and laid the scope in the saddles. Right away with the naked eye I could see the front of the scope was leaning towards the creek to the right. Took a picture with my cell phone of the mounts. Not a great pic. but you can see the problem. The rear mount is off center to the left more than what the picture shows. Glad I didn't plan any hunts soon. Minimum 14 day turn around from Savage I was told and they will not issue a new rifle even though they have to put the original serial number on a new receiver. Seems like a lot of money for a rifle that's been torn down. I've been told by several folks not to buy anything Savage. I hope they're wrong. So far I'm not impressed with their customer service. Took 15 minutes on hold to get though to a rep. who obviously does not like his job. :good:Update on rifle on post #27

That's very disappointing. You're probably right about how the holes were drilled given how the front base dips. But if you haven't shipped it back yet, consider trying a different set of bases in case the bases supplied with the rifle happened to be off. That happened with my Marlin 982vs .22WMR except that the problem was that the front base was causing the scope to cant off to the right. Took a horrendous amount of windage adjustment just to get it centered and it was a scope I knew worked fine on other rifles. I bought an EGW picatinny rail and the scope straightened out nicely. At a minimum, take the bases off and look down the receiver to see how straight the holes are drilled. You may well be right that they were drilled incorrectly. But it might just be the bases.

I measured the bases. They seem to be drilled very close to center if not right on. I will take them off as you suggest to check out the rifle. Thanks

That's such an easy fix! Take the front mount off, take a file or dremel and shave off enough of the left side to level it again. Just don't take too much off or you'll end up buying another mount. I've had to do this to a Ruger, a Weatherby Mk IV and a Remington 700. Were they bad rifles-no! They sure are accurate as heck now with a slight shave job. Not every rifle is going to come out perfect from the manufacturers. If it wasn't the scope mount, it would've been something like a nick in the chamber or paint peeling or something else. Take it to a gunsmith if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself. The turn around is probably the same and you never know what it'll be like when it comes back from Savage since it appears that you already have your doubts about the company. I'd do it myself if it were mine but that's me. Good luck.

I have not thought about shaping the mount, but that is an option. I trust myself to do a good job if I choose to do that. Thanks for the post. Thats why I love this site. Lots of good advise.

I have never paid attention to the base from factory .I just make sure they are tight and put on my rings and scope.

wouldnt.If the rifle is not drilled properly,send it back as you will never be happy.knowing those holes were drilled crooked would never allow me to trust how the rifle shot..

I'm sorry to hear that. I have two Savages and they have both been great. I had a bad magazine on one and their customer service was great sending a new one out immediately.

I'll bet it's the bases. It's a $600 rifle with ten cent bases.

I think it's the bases too. The reason I think that is that is what happened to one of my Savage rifles. They got a very bad batch of bases from another company. They sent me new bases for free and apologized for the problem.

Sorry to hear about that Pat.I've heard about similar situations with all makes of Rifles.Personally I've never seen one canted so far off to one side before.I have heard of using epoxy to level scope bases, but I don't think you could put enough in there to fix that.If you can, go pick up another set of bases & try them out, if its the same, then you will know the reciever was tapped incorrectly.Best of luck, Lee

Sorry also that you have an issue. It happens with any thing, sooner or later we will have a problem with something we purchase. I would take the bases off also and just look at the action. As far off as those bases appear to be, you will be able to tell right away with a good strait edge if the holes drilled in your action are not done correctly. The way things are manufactured to day, there is greater odds that it is the bases that are bad. Check them before sending your rifle back. Bases are cheap and you can have Savage send you another set or buy a better set or one piece mount with matching rings. I hope for your sake that it is just the bases. I have learned through the years to buy the best bases and rings for a rifle that I can afford. All the rifles and scopes in the world are not worth a penny if they are not held together by quality mounts and rings. I am real tuff on some rifles and have broke scope mounting systems that would be considered by most guys as real good ones.

So, I found the problem. The 2 rear holes are drilled slightly to the left, but more importantly they are drill and tapped at quite an off angle. See if you can tell the difference. UPS is picking it up tomorrow.

That really sucks. I would send it to Savage and let them take it apart and put a new action on it. It has been my experience that they will fix it right and put more detail in to quality when something like this happens. They do not need you to get two bad rifles to talk about. It could and does happen with any manufacturer. I am a Remington guy myself, but have seen and shot several savages that were plenty accurate. I would not be happy with it the way it is and I do not think you will be either. I do believe that Savage will fix it right and better than a run of the mill rifle if you send it back.

That sucks when it comes to a brand new gun. I also had some unpleasant experience with savage when I bought my 12fv in 223 several years ago. It had problem to extract the spend case and load a fresh round from the magazine to the chamber. They sent me a new rifle but with the same problem (I had to wait another 10 days) , so I sent it back for repair, and waited two weeks more to get it back. I say you send it back and demand a new rifle in good quality, they owe you one.

I have a newruger pistol MK lll hunter the rear sight is canted I had the shop send it back for repairs before I even left the shop with it they send it back a month later saying the installed a new rear sight but it looks the same still.

You're right. That's pathetic. Write a letter to Savage's CEO, Ron Coburn, and ask how they can let something like that go out the door. He won't be pleased.

Another thing to consider is that the action may have warped during heat treating. Savage heat treats their actions after all the maching is done and they usually catch them during the final inspection but occasionally a bad one slips by.

Only 14 days, consider yourself lucky. I've had lots of problems with guns bought over the last ten years.Remington 7400, muzzle crowned way off centerRemington 552 Speedmaster, sights mounted crookedCZ Redhead Deluxe, ejectors problemsBeretta 92FS, barrel and slide breach faces machined out of squareWinchester model 70 Classic Laminate, fired cases stuck in chamberBrowning Maxus, piston spring broke after one duck seasonTaurus .357 snubbie, cylinder got stuck in frame after the first 5 roundsMarlin 1894 .44 mag, wrong sights, wouldn't adjust low enough to sight in.And each of the ones I didn't fix myself took at least 3 months to get the gun back from the factory so don't get too worried about the quality of Savage products. They all turn out lemons once in a while.....and I think most of them end up in my gun safe. :bleh[1]:
My guns are mine, they aren't for sale, and I only give guns to people that I really like. So I guess the government is **** out of luck.

In 1990 I bought my first Colt Python. I did not even get fifty rounds through it before it went out of time. It was returned under warranty and I got it back eight months later only to have the grip screws pull through the "Rubber" Colt grips. Again returned under warranty. I got the gun back four months after that. Nothing is perfect anymore.

Rifle UpdateJust a follow-up on my rifle. Savage engineers called and said that although the rear scope mount holes are tapped at an angle, they are within their tolerance limits. (looking at the photos, I wonder what the limit is). They were able to adjust windage with a scope enough to get a straight shot. My concern was not so much obtaining accuracy. I knew I could do that with a windage adjustable mount and scope adjustment. It just seems to me that this falls quite short of good quality control. They said they were going to re-tap the rear holes "within" tolorance to give the screws a chance to self align with the scope mount. To me, that looks like an opportunity for some lateral movement down the road. Right or wrong, the rifle is on it's way back this week. Still excited to get started with it. What's your opinion of Savage's evaluation and fix???

Sell it or Trade it.Thats BS Customer Service, I would raise a stink over this, call as many people in the company as you can, write letters & send Faxes. Do something to get some attention on the matter & maybe they will do right by you.Lee
