Went out scouting last week and found a whole bunch of rabbits. Was planning on going back this weekend to get me some but I just realized there's different seasons for different kinds. How do you distinguish them? I just googled all of them and they look pretty much the same to me (except jack rabbits they seem to have much bigger ears and the ones I saw weren't jack's).I'll be hunting them in Cleveland National, anyone know if there's a predominant kind? Thanks

If you are sure they aren't jack rabbits then the only other rabbits are Brush, Cottontail and Pigmy Rabbits, and Varying Hare (Snowshoe). Those the season doesn't open until July 1.

The only one that does not have a season are jacks. Your going to lots of cottontails now they are breeding and just like deer they get stuppid durring the rut. Rabbit season is closed till july ist. so its jacks are nothing right now. jacks are big with BLACK tails every thing els has white tails.

Both are very common in socal. Jacks are mostly in the desert area and Cottons are mostly in the forrest type areas, but there are a lot of areas that will have both

Woods are full of coyotes too, do you eat them also? I don't blame him, no jacks for me thanks. Why eat SPAM (jacks) when you can have steak (cottontails).

Nothing wrong with eating Jacks. People just have different tastes or opinions. Most animals are edible. Society, culture, religion, etc has more effect on what people deem suitable to eat than actual taste or experience.I eat crows too and they are great. I have eaten everything I have shot except for ground squirrels and a Badger. I dont eat ground squirrels cuz of the plague (fleas), and didnt eat the badger cuz it stinks like piss when skinning it.Some cultures wont eat pork or crustaceans, while others eat dogs and cats. What makes them wrong and what makes us right? It just bugs me when people get snobbish about eating certain things because most of the time it is unjustified.dos centavos

Can't say that I would or would not eat a Jack but what do you eat when a 36grn boolit going 3600FPS tends to blow them to crap ? One time there was nothing from the shoulders to the hips . The rest went East of its body . Andy

Yeah but I've never seen a rabbit with many fleas at all. The ones I shoot only have a couple fleas at certain times of the year. The ground squirrels that I have shot and walked up to and checked out, were completely crawling with fleas. Never seen anything like it.They even closed a campground in D13 for a while due to finding infected ground squirrels in the area

Close, Thumper, but not completely the same as what UC Davis Agriculture Dept says:http://www.ipm.ucdav...TES/pn7419.html"Cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis, are the most common ectoparasite on domestic cats and dogs. Dog fleas, C. canis, look like cat fleas but are rare in California. Sticktight fleas, Echidnophaga gallinacea, are commonly found on ground squirrels and poultry; the females firmly attach themselves along the ears and eyes of their host. They can become a problem with pets that roam. The ground squirrel flea, Oropsylla montana, is found on ground squirrels and is the vector of sylvatic plague in California. However, fleas on cats or dogs in California most likely are cat fleas."
