I have been using Remington large rifle 9 1/2 primers for my .308 load. I am loading 42.9 grains of 8208 with a 168 gr HPBT and getting 2507 fps muzzel velocity. It doesn't seem to be a "hot" load and well within reccomendation but the primer cups are burning pin holes through about 20% of the rounds right at the inside corner of the cup. Bad lot? Any advise would be greatly appriciated.

I have been thinking about this today and I will take a shot at it. Have you tried this load in a different rifle? If so the results?? You may have a problem with a firing pin coming out too far or being too sharp(more of a point than rounded). This would show that it is the rifle if the loads work ok in a different rifle. You also could change primer brands with the same load. I would not worry about backing off charges etc. Just try a different primer. If it still does it I would also suspect the rifle.

A picture always goes a long ways in trying to determine any problem......

Another thought, are the primers seated deep enough? They should be just below flush with the case head.

I did make sure all the primers were seated properly. The pin holes are occuring at the corner of the cup in every instance. Maybe another manufacturers primer is the answer.

Then next like Divernhunter suggested, I would check the firing pin. Is that a start load, and if not, did the problem occur during load work up, or just with this powder charge?

The same pin hole burns are in my .308 and 22-250 loads.

Seems pretty obvious it is the primers then.

Im no expert but i would consider a magnum primer and reworking the load.

Is there any danger in using magnum primers of the correct size to fit in a 223 shell(cartridge)? :smiley-funny-post-sign:
