This morning I went out to make a few calling stands and pick up my trail cameras. It was raining in the higher country so I only got to pick up 2 of my 3 trail cameras and then I headed to some lower country to get out of the rain.On my first stand I had coyotes calling back to my female coyote vocals I was playing. The coyotes I heard were way off in the distance. The way the wind was blowing was different than normal because of the small storm front that was blowing through. So for the second stand I drove around and up a big open canyon "about 2 miles" in the direction that I heard some of the coyotes calling from.It was perfect, the wind was blowing down this big canyon towards me and I had a place to hide my truck. All I had to do was walk up the canyon about 400 yards to where it had a pass with a saddle at the top to my right and the big canyon to my left.I set my CS-24 out about 60 yards from me with the CS-24 speaker pointed up the canyon and the SP-55 Speaker pointed to the right towards the pass and saddle.I started the stand with Female Coyote Howls on volume 40 and within 15 seconds I had a bunch of coyotes howling and challenge barking back at me. They were up towards the saddle to the right were my SP-55 Speaker was pointed. I could tell that there was more than two of them.I switched to Male Coyote Challenge 4 sound and the coyotes did not like it. I could tell they were getting closer. They were going nuts.It took me a few minutes but I finally spotted them through my scope. I could see 3 of them about 500 yards away. They were all sitting down facing me about 10 ft apart from each other.I muted the Male Challenge 4 sound and watched them through my scope. They were still screaming at me. Then I switched to Coyote Pup Distress 3 sound and I was watching them through my scope when I hit the mute button to make the sound come on.Within 2 seconds of hearing the Pup Distress 3 sound one of them got up and started running straight for my CS-24, the other two coyotes took off right behind the first one.I was laying prone with a bi-pod on my AR-15 243 WSSM so I moved it a little to the right to get ready. When I spotted the coyotes again they were about 250 yards away and they were flying down the ridge. Then I saw that there was 4 of them. I started lowering the Pup Distress 3 sound and that seemed to make the 4 coyotes run faster. All 4 coyotes ran side by side about as fast as they could run right up to my caller. When they smelled the caller they scattered like a covey of quail.I shot at two different coyotes running to my left and missed all 4 shots, then I hit my number 1 preset which is Coyote Pup Screams on volume 40. I looked up to the right and saw a coyote stop about 150 yards away and look back. I nailed him.Is it just me or do you guys hit standing coyotes more often than running coyotes also?Posted ImageYou can see in this picture this is exactly how I had the CS-24 and SP-55 Speaker sitting at the stand. I had the CS-24 and carry bag hiding behind one of the bigger bushes I could find.I sure wish I was laying down 15 yards from my CS-24 with a shotgun on that stand.Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImageThose little bobcats played around in that trapping lure for 16 minutes.

LOL... No, it's definitely not you, Bob... While I have, on rare occasion, hit a few all out running coyotes, it is just that... RARE (as hen's teeth), and I try and avoid it like the plague. But that is just me! Some folks, both men and women, are in fact pretty darn good it. But not me, probably due to my avoiding those types of shots & thus not becoming good at it, along with getting &/or letting most coyotes stop or slow down enough for the easier shot.Other than that, coyote vocals don't work at all, eh? LOL (retorical question). Great write up and pics and Thanks for sharing :g-hog-poppin-up-ani: Frank

Great Pictures and story. Yes the running ones are hard to hit. I do every thing i can to get them to stop for just a second.

Some old Tom Miranda's Floodwood Yote Dope and some Carman's Canine Call. The cattle really like it too.

Good job on the coyotes. I miss standing shots. Great pictures.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Attached File  1.jpg   26.4K   13 downloadsi miss alot of running shots, but i have a back up i miss standing shots too, shotgun is the the way to go. I like the kitty cats was there vidio of them. here is a pic of a cat i called in 2 weeks ago my buddy shot the cat. the cat came along the rim on a ledge and suddenly out of a hole the cat popped out. the cat was less then 10 feet away from my buddy and his 10 yr old son. this was the 1st time his boy went calling. when he turned the cat humped up and hissst at him, i was looking below for a coyote he shot , when i stood up to ask what it was there was hair floating around him, he could only say in a whisper bobcat he was kinda white colored not the cat my buddy, lol
