All I know is they say not legal for sale in California, so it must be written somewhere.

(You) might not be able to purchase them anymore, but that doesn't mean you can't use it if you got it. :D

I'm new to this forum, but thought I'd share a photo of a nice black bear taken in Zone D-3 opening weekend this year (Sept 23rd). I was the only one to have a bear tag - we were all hunting for deer, but I told everyone bear was my first priority. 6:45am heding out to put my nephew on a stand and we looked across the granite ridge to a smaller ridge 300yds off and saw this black bear swatting at the brush...he must have been gowing for chipmunks or something. I knew I couldn't get closer as I would have gone down a draw, then tried to find him up a 100yds. I had cross winds about 20-30mph, so I layed across a rock and squeezed the trigger - behind the right shoulder and down he went. First year hunting with my new Benelli R-1 .300 Win Mag... Right now I only have the hide in these pictures, but I soon will have some from whn he was in the field...took 6 guys (qutered and skinned) 5 1/2 hrs to pack it about 500-600yds out. We estimate he was between 500-550lbs and about 10yrs old. The hide and head is with the taxidermist as I write this anad my wife is just thrilled (NOT!) :-). That's me on the left and my nephew on the right...Attached File  1.jpg   29.39K   6 downloadsAttached File  2.jpg   26.01K   6 downloads

That's a nice bear. What a thrill, and if I read your post correctly, you had you young nephew with you. What a thrill for him too. A lot of work packing an animal that big out of the woods. Like getting a elk, at 6-700 pounds. While packing it makes you wonder why you shot the damned thing. :D

I'll be home the next 2 weekends, but the last weekend I'll either be back in D6 with some friends (except I'll be chasing squirrels), or I have a D5 tag that I might have to go solo on... Anybody been seeing anything worthwhile in D5?

Personally I havven't seen anything in D5. Only time I go is when the weather moves in. Have seen very quality bucks in D4 area. Although no one in my group could get a shot. I didn't see any of them except for a flash of horns goin down (2 secs worth) the brush. The other guys missed a couple 4x4s, 3x2 and a 5x -- though one guy ended up with a fork after the snow up there the other week. I'm heading to D3 this weekend to see if I can nab a buck to go with my bear.

Yeah. The guys in camp were cussing me out :D , but hey we got 150lbs+ of qtrs and back-strap for sausage and I'm sharing it with them. They missed their bucks, but at least I brought home the bacon...err bear that is!Yeah, next year it's Wyoming on a guided elk trip. I bought it through the Rocky Elk Mountain Foundation auction. While not "like" packing it out as I'll have a guide & horse to do the work I did have to help pack out 3 nice muleys from Idaho last year...check these out....near Salmon River -- all 3 pointers, but notice the one with the nice tall rack///

Btw, the funniest thing is when we sent our mother the picture, she looked at this next photo and asked "why'd you bury the rest of the deer in the ground?" Little did she know it was a picture of just the head and horns :lol:Attached File  1.jpg   21.64K   6 downloadsAttached File  2.jpg   28.38K   6 downloads

IF I don't draw my elk tag next year I'm definitely heading back to Idaho. It's about a 19hr drive from the Bay Area, but if you stay in Twin Falls, then head-up to Salmon afterwards it breaks it up a bit. It's awesme hunting. Steep hills. We genrally hunted from about 3,000' elevation to almost 8'000'-9,000'. Can't take quads off-road, but you can if you are going into to pack the animal out. We must have logged at least 10-14miles each day hunting up and down the ridges. Well worth it. These bucks were mainly shot in the lower elevations as the snow the week before scattered the animals. We really wanted trophy bucks - usually up high and in solitude, but couldn't come across any. My friend shot a nice 4x4, with 30"+ spread in the higher elevations the year before...
