He might not be a monster but he'll eat good is right. Plus there are a lot of people out there that wish they could have got him. I can name two right now and their initials are TD and PS.

Yep, that is a nice one. Mine last year had a spike on one side and a little fork on the other. But you know what, I was eating good while the folks who laughed at me for shooting a little buck didn't get to eat venison. Great job! In Calif, you have to take what you can when you can.

Looks like Wes has a Remington Model 742. What Caliber?

It's a 7400 in .30-06. My uncle bought it about 25 years ago, hunted 2 seasons with it, then it sat in the gun safe for almost 15 years before I bought it from him. It's been a good rifle and I've killed a few bucks with it, but I'm ready to go back to a bolt and try a different caliber (I think a new .257 weatherby mag is in my future). The 7400 needed a new scope this year, but I didn't want to drop too much $ since I knew I would be investing in a new deer rifle soon. I bought one of Cabela's Pine Ridge scopes (4-12x40/$109.99) to mount on there, and I'll say I am quite impressed for the money. Obviously no Leupold, but anybody who might be in the market for a decent cheap scope should check 'em out.

Wess did teach me something what not too do when you gut a deer ... sorry wess I just had too say something...

No problem, I agree that wasn't one of my best gutting jobs. I actually wanted to hang him to gut him, but I didn't see any good branches to throw a rope over... Oh well, I never claimed to be perfect (but at least I got a deer)! :(

Since we're doin' the picture thing, here's one of my tree squirrels from friday...Posted ImageI'll be home the next 2 weekends, but the last weekend I'll either be back in D6 with some friends (except I'll be chasing squirrels), or I have a D5 tag that I might have to go solo on... Anybody been seeing anything worthwhile in D5?

I was up there opening weekend. My uncle got a 2 pointer and I jumped a forky but couldn't get a shot due to my nieces head. People were taken some 2 pointers and forky's out every day. 1 camp had a 2x3 and a 6 point. The dear have prop moved on though. If you go out check the onion valley area on the other side of Bear Lake Resv. Driving up the Mt you will see a nice open area where I jumped the forky. John

That must have been the hot spot since the DFG reports for opening weekend were pretty depressing. But then, the report for D6 was depressing too... I'll be sure to check out that area if I decide to chase more deer (I think it's all going to depend on the weather). Thanks for the info!

That is so true. I've gotten my fair share of small deer in California. The trick is to make sure they let go of mamma's teat before plugging them. The veal venison tastes better anyway!Jason

I have the 742 same gun different model number because mines older I got it in the late sixties. It's also a .30-06 and has killed more deer than I can remember. It's still a very accurate gun for a semi auto. I liked it because I loved to shoot the coyotes we would jump during our deer drives. My partners hated me shooting the yotes but when the gun went off it usually jumped the deer too. So being a semi auto really paid off on quick follow up shots. It was hard to beat for thick or even open areas. They used to make ten round clips for them too, but that wouldn't be legal now.

You can still get the 10 round mags in Cali. but from what I understand you can't hunt big game with a rifle that has a mag capacity over 5 rounds wich is weird because my 30-30 will hold 6 in the tube mag.member ECV chapter 58

Yeah, I saw the HA sticker on the big mirror in there. Next weekend there should be at least a few Clampers in there... Today, right when we showed up for lunch, there was a drunk guy & a drunk girl leaving and riding off together on a horse. That's why I love that place, you never know what you're gonna see!

Sometimes we like to play some banjo music when we bring a new guy into our little hunting group. There's some thing about being deep in the woods and banjo music that makes em squirm a little. ;) HAHA!!!
