Hi I'm new to the forum and to hunting, just got the license and air rifle. I only plan on hunting rabbits and squirrels, so is San Jacinto WA a good spot for that?

Oh wow it's crazy you mention this, I actually got my game bird stamp yesterday because I was planning on checking out that area too. I'm primarily hunting with airguns right now. I was gonna call and ask if one can hunt with an airgun since it says 'shotgun only'. I have a link with a number and other info. if your interested. They have dove, quail and rabbit that are in season and 'available'. Email me at smokin24716@yahoo.com if you want someone to come with you, I have my hunting license and upland bird stamp. I might go to the high desert tomorrow since my friend says the weathers been nice, no wind and his nuisance squirrels have been out on his property...anyways good luck,Henry here's the link http://www.dfg.ca.go...into/index.html with directions and phone number.

Be careful about Wildlife Areas and the use of anything but shotguns. There is a link at the bottom of the WA you linked.Hunting and Other Public Uses on State and Federal AreasIn that link it mentions the method of take in those areas.

( b ) Method of Take.(1) Firearms and Archery Equipment, General: Except as otherwise provided, no person shall possess in the field or discharge a firearm, bow and arrow, air or gas gun, or other propulsive device of any kind on any wildlife area (see subsection 551( b )(9)).(2) Except as otherwise provided, no shotguns larger than twelve gauge and no rifles, pellet guns, combination rifle-shotguns, pistols, archery equipment, or revolvers shall be possessed in the field or discharged on any Type A or Type B areas. All legal firearms and archery equipment may be used on Type C areas unless prohibited (see subsection 551(q)).(3) Shotgun shells shall not contain shot size larger than size BB in lead and size T in steel. The use or possession of shot size larger than BB in non-toxic shot other than steel is prohibited on State and Federal Wildlife areas. On those areas where big game species may be hunted, shotguns with slugs may be used.

I would check with the DFG in charge of that area before having a face to face with them in the field.

Yeah I tried calling and no answer, I would make sure I was allowed to shoot airguns before I went down there anyways. I saw that they have a special upland game area that I wanted inquire about...I will find out tomorrow at the local DFG tomorrow that's a few miles away from me...I'm glad I ended up going to my friends property and I got me a fat ground squirrel with a .22 predator at 45 yards...

Yeah, I just read that. It only applies to Type A and Type B areas. San Jacinto WA is a Type A, so I guess no air guns allowed. http://www.californi...showtopic=17927

SJWA is shotgun only area for sure, and hunters are only allowed 25 shotshells while in the field. Also, you can't hunt waterfowl on the upland game area and vice versa. I shot some dove once on the ponds while duck hunting and was told it was a big "NO, NO."
