Animals seem to hold tighter in the rain and wet.

Its been my experience that everything hunkers down when its raining - except for the ducks and geese that is...

We had pretty good luck one time in the rain when a distressed land owner in Anza invited us on her property to slam some coyotes. We shot two but got soaked at night in the cold. We ended up at a remote laundramat at about 10PM, standing there in our underwear with all of our clothes (almost) and boots tumbling in the dryers. A lady came in about a half-hour later, ignored us and did her laundry. I was afraid we would get arrested for indecent exposure. We were so cold and wet, we didn't care. Neither did she.

It depends how hard it is raining for me. I have done well if it is not raining to hard. I like hunting for coyotes in a light rain or when it is just sprinkling the most. It keeps a lot of people from going hunting for them which is great in some of the spots I hunt. I think they have to eat on rainy days too, if it has rained several days in a row. I also think they can track better in the wet conditions just like a hound when it is wet. Wet ground holds sent better. Rain also knocks sent out of the air and holds it in a more confined area, maybe also knocking my scent out of the air and holding it where it is at a little better. If it is raining real hard and real windy, I think they lose some of there defenses making them hole up. I will still hunt some times on these days. I just try it where I think they are hiding from the weather. Some times it works. For my two cents on this topic I will continue to hunt in the rain. It has not melted me yet. LOLPosted ImagePosted ImageA little wet but a successful hunt. I called this one in on a day that it was raining lightly. I killed him at 20 yards or there bouts. He came right down the fence line on the opposite side of the fence I was setting on. I seen him coming in and could not get a good shot due to fence and post's until he seen me and realized something was wrong. He swung out then and tried to circle me. I barked and stopped him about 20 yards on the other side of the fence my rifle is setting on. You can see where I was moving around and laying in the grass in the first picture.

Well, I normally do not like hunting in a "steady", even light rain or snow, However...Often times the very best hunting that I've had, is immediately after a storm &/or between storms. I have watched the weather channel / reports & actually driven several hrs to hunt inbetween "predicted" storms. Sometimes it worked, other times I got soaked. Many times I hiked in while rain or snow fell or sat in the truck waiting for a storm to quit and was then rewarded with some of my best game immediately after (the storm quit). Also fog, once lifted enough to see, can be very productive as can cooler weather and/or cloud cover. I guess what I am trying to say is, when weather is the most miserable & most folks are sitting home in their chair, is when the best hunting can be had.Good LuckFrank

I don't mind getting wet. With that said, if it's too miserable to go out then hunting is usually poor. As this is the Small Game Forum, food is usually available. The rain will tend push critters into the dry areas so on rainy days look for protected areas that will hold game, sometimes it's it is easier hunting with a bit of rain than without.

rabbits and ground squirrels do not like rain but grays will be out in a light rain and coyotes will be out. light rain or fog is when I seem to do best on them.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.
