me and my boys take our share of grey squirrels each year. they are pretty abundant in the area we hunt. this year it seems that about 1 out of every 3 we take is covered in bald spots and there are red sores on their bellies. the skin looks very leathery and they are very underweight. anyone seen this or know what this is? i hate wasting game but i leave these lay. yesterday my son shot his limit and one looked healthy but had the red sores on his belly. any info would be helpful. thanks.

Squirrels do get mange and squirrel pox, but I don't know if either one of these is present in the area you hunt.

I have seen warbles many times caused by bot fly larvae...but not sure if that is what you have there. Warbles are nasty looking but are no concern as far as eating the game. I'd take a picture and possibly ask game management if something else is in your area. Here's some examples of warbles...http://entomology.if...ly/overview.htm

Like Hogswild82 said---I too have done my share of squirrel hunting, but I have never seen what you're describing on any of the game. Sorry I can't help. All I can tell you is that it looks and sounds nasty and I wouldn't eat them!

this area is a few miles out of mountain ranch(D-5). this is a private ranch and we used to see greys all over the place. this year some days we will drive the whole ranch a not see one.

Its mainge. Shot two last year like that. Seen some ground squirrels like that also . Less hair to worry about when you toss them on the camp fire. Now im starting to ich.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.
