I make a load for the 1911 gov consisting of 5.5 grn universal clays and 230 lrn. Add a wilson buffer with the standard recoil spring and it was chewed up within 50 rnds. So i order A 18.5 wilson spring and it too chewed up after 100 rnds. My ? Is do i need to reduce my load

Better get yourself a loading data book, I'd hate to hear something bad happen.edited: I see that there is actually a Universal Clays... Learn something new everyday.. How crappy is that, 3 different powders called Clays..Ok, I'd still back off the Universal load data and start at 5.0. That said, I'm not a big fan of shock buffers in 1911's either.

My hornady 7th edition with 230 lrn and clays universal (might not be my type which is universal clays) shows range from 5.2 to 6.2

I reload the jrn, 230gr with 5.0 of Win 231. It's a safe load and after firing numerous rds, my buffer is still in great shape.
