Well, actually it's my first cottontail EVER, so that makes it all the much better.I drove two hours south near Fresno and the place I went to, from what I hear, is supposed to be exceptional for waterfowl and also is said to have healthy cottontail populations. I showed up around 7:30pm and drove in to take a look around before I got out. Seen a couple bunnies bolt across the road so began walking some dirt roads and paths although I didn't see too much. Coming back I saw one nestled in the middle of the road so I walked off the road and circled around him. Coming up, he saw me approximately 50 yards away and bolted off the path into some shrubs. I walked in, nearly stepped on him and as he zig-zagged away I let him have some #7 shot! His buddy fled at the same time but he was long gone before I could draw a bead on him, but it's okay because I'll be back for him this coming saturday. Woulda stayed for more, but it was starting to get late so I decided to pack it up and call it a day.At the moment I have my bunny soaking in saltwater. Anyone have any good recipies? I'm not sure how I plan to cook him yet, but I'll probably end up sticking him on the BBQ.Also, does anyone have any words of wisdom or tactics? It didn't take me long to notice these guys are hard to see so you kind of have to zero in on those little white tails of theirs. This time around I waited to hunt during the evening. Would early morning be better?
Got my first Cottontail of the season!!!

Congrats on your first. Around here down in So. Cal., cottontails are moving around between 6:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. They hide in the bushes or in their burrows during the heat of the day. Then you'll start seeing them move around again in the late afternoons into early evening, say from 5 p.m. or so on.

Nice going. Any chicken resipies are good for cottontails. I will chase them all day long .But early morning and then late in the day are best,
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

Sounds good. I think I will try around 8:30 - 9am tommorow and see how that goes...
