Two years ago my wife wanted to know if we could grow blueberries in our garden. We looked around and finally talked to our nurseryman. He suggested a couple of varieties that should do well. Well we have six varieties now and they produce like crazy. The biggest problem now is keeping the birds away from them. The mocking birds are the very worst as they specialists at getting through every little gap in the netting. But we have them at bay for the moment and I thought I'd show you a blueberry cobbler we made last week. It isn't pretty but it sure ate well!

Just to show you the size of some of our berries. These are variety called Darrow. That's a quarter in there for size.

We have been getting about a gallon container of berries a week and they seem to keep producing.

Thats great! I wish I was growing blueberries! My Zucchini is growing like crazy! My Tomatoes are on the verge. I just planted Bok Choi and they sprouted 3 days later. The cucumbers are doing ok but they are a bush plant, not enough sun where I have them. The Chili peppers are looking nice and my mint is going crazy. Not much space for berries in my small city garden but it keeps me sane one day I want to grow blueberries and maybe some Acai palms too.

I never expected them to get so BIG! But they are so sweet and a mouthful to eat. The Darrow's are almost too big to put on cereal. We're making more cobbler this weekend. I didn't get pictures of the blueberry muffins but they were sooooo good.We have another plant more like a bush but it will grow into a bushy tree. It's called a serviceberry. Sort of like a blueberry, very tasty. I'm hoping next year to get several gallons a week of berries off of it.

Hey John did you start them from seeds? Where can I get some seeds like that?

I bought plants I didn't start from seed. Just find a good nursery and they can tell you the plant that will do well in your climate. That's the important part.

I love blueberry pie. Your photos make me hungry, even in spite of the nasty tick-berry photo! I live in Camino (Apple Hill) and there is a "pick-em yourself" blueberry farm nearby that I need to visit with my son, ASAP!

That tick grossed me out.Nice berry's it make my mouth water. We have wild black beery patches all along the canal bank and a few mall berry tree's. I also have a lot of elderberry's growing like weeds .Has anyone ever tasted them before?

We had tons of elderberry bushes up in Ohio where I grew up. They do taste good and I bet would taste even better in pie or cobbler where sugar gets involved. They were one of our favorite ammo for pea shooter wars. They used to make heavy duty fly swatters wayyyy back when. They used a hollow and perfectly straight piece of PVC type material. They were the best pea shooters around as they were a perfect fit for navy beans and elderberry's. They might have even been rifled I think we actually were the first to discover 'paint ball' wars as those berry's are mighty juicy.

Pee shooter wars you guys knew how to have fun in the country LOL we just threw dirt clogs at each other!Those berry's always looked good but I didn't now what they were so I googled it and found out they are elderberry's. I also read that the flowers from the plant can be put in badder and fried up and eaten.
