Hi, I seen something that you can put your deer on and drag them out. Has anyone used one in the rough s. cal terrain before? Some areas are wilderness where you can't take a game cart into. So, If God blesses me this year with a deer, I will probably need something to drag it out with that will be light enough to carry in and strong enough to drag over rocks thx robert

Build a "gurney" out of PVC similar to a ladder. Use zip ties to secure a surface of landscape shade mesh to the main beams of the gurney. The beauty of this system is that you can take the pieces of PVC in the field in a backpack and build it once you get your deer.

It looks easy but when you have that branch on your shoulders for 8 miles you are very happy to make it back to camp!

I actually made gurny but, the problem is, since it will more then likely be me by myself. You can make scrape marks or the ranger will fine me lol. I can't bring a cart with wheels because it my leave a mark and you can't scrape the dirt lol. I just love cali.

I used to carry mine like the hunter in the orange cap. But on public property I'd definitely make sure I had an orange vest or something to go over the antlers like the deer above.

Get a frame pack cut it up and carry it out, you don't need to keep the skin, legs or other un-useable parts, why carry what you don't need.

I'm glad you guys clarified what was going on in the first picture, I thought maybe that guy was tired of living and was going to either feed the bears or the mountain lions lol

+1 on what Rae uses. I bought a roll up plastic tobbogan sled from Big 5 that is 5 foot long by almost 3 feet wide. I burned some holes for rope to be strung thru when my animal is on it which also holds it in place. It's cheap and leaves a very shallow drag mark on the ground. The wind will cover the drag marks easily. My sled had taken out 4 muley's in Arizona's desert/rock terrains and is still in my hunting trailer today.

Guess I'm to old for such things, I go back to camp and get help. The only other method I would use is a good pack horse. I'm not carrying any tick covered deer on my back.

I wondered about the ticks too actually, how long does it take the ticks before they leave a dead animal to start looking for a new host?I guess no one saw the humor about my response about the guy in the first picture about feeding the bears or lions lol :drinks:

Ticks usually leave the body as soon as they detect the temp change of the body they're on. I killed a muley in Arizona last year that was covered with them. I sprayed my boots, pant legs and sleeves down with bug repellant (I was done hunting anyway) and after I'd field dressed the animal, I couldn't see but a few ticks on it. They had moved to the gut pile and bloody rocks that were still warm from the sun.

There is also a harness at wallyworld. You wear it like a backpack and it gets the deers head off the ground and drag like no tomorrow. I like to put a tarp around the animal, makes it alot easier. With harness and tarp it maybe two lbs.

I cut it up on the spot, and put the meat into pillow cases. That way you just pack out the meat, and the horns..Done deal. No dragging for me!

That's okay on the flat. On a hilly terrain it will be very difficult. We tried it on the deer below but we had a hard time. We don't want to butcher the deer without taking picture(we left the camera in the truck) so we ended up carrying the deer among us, two guys shoulder to shoulder, walking side by side back to the truck. Do a search for the "gutless method". NO bones or hide to carry out that way and alot less messy.
