I could not locate any such provision so I emailed the DFG directly, their reply may surprise you. -----Original Message-----From: AskaWarden Warden [mailto:AskaWarden@dfg.ca.gov] Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2010 10:09 AMTo: BRUCE CARTERSubject: RE: Fish and Game-Communications equipmentBruce Carter: Current Fish and Game laws do not prohibit the communications devices nor restrict their use as described in your question.Phil NelmsEnforcement Division>>> "BRUCE CARTER" <########@#####.net> 5/19/2010 5:48 PM >>>It occured to me that for situations where I and my hunting buddy aredispersed in such a way that we cannot hear one another in the field, asimple comm system (silent headset/ear plug type) might be a cool tool. Ifone of us spots a coyote closing in on the other (who may be unable to seethe animal's approach...backdoor stalks, obstructions, etc) that a whisperinto a headset might change the outcome considerably. Also a nice thing ifya happen to see three dozen illegals packing pot with armed escorts movingin...or just to wake your snoozing partner up! Is there anything in the regsrestricting the use of a close range comm. system? If there is...is carryinga cell phone illegal too? Thanks,BruceIt's not illegal to use radios or other types of comunication while you hunt but you can't use it in for the purpose that you are thinking of. I don't know the regulation verbatum but it shouldn't be hard to find.

How? LOL... Not very well!!! The only way a balloon can change direction is to go up or down to seek a breeze blowing in a different direction. From the ground, the crew might know that the surface breeze is going at a different angle then the balloon is drifting up higher and, therefore want to let the pilot know to descend so he can go in that different direction. However, the pilots often will drool a frothy ball of spit over the side and watch as it falls to see if it hits a wind shear and changes direction. Crude but effective. Balloonists often play a game at rallies called "Hare & Hounds". One balloon (the Hare) takes off with a head start and deliberately changes elevations and angles of travel. Minutes later all the 'hound' balloons take off and try to match the 'hare' balloon's course. The hare eventually drops a small sack of flour that splatters on the ground below. The hounds each try to drop their flour sacks and the winner is the one who comes closest to the hare balloon's flour mark on the ground. One on my favorite memories is watching a herd of deer freak out as we flew low over them. Having no airborne predators, the deer never thought to look up but ran like heck in every direction trying to escape the roar of the propane burners. How does a ground crew help guide a hot air balloon's course?

Makes sense. I would not use em while coyote hunting unless perhaps I were in Mt. Lion habitat. Thinking more about pig, moose, bear and elk type hunt situations. The bad neighborhoods. My hunting buddies and I have used radios for years. They work for us. What we do is leave them off and then use them to check in with each other at designated time intervals, like every two hours.. If we hear a shot we will turn them on and see if one of our group has an animal down or needs any help.

Silly me. I figured since this is the California Predators Club the question pertained to actually calling and shooting coyotes, bobcats and such. Since the question is obviously wide open...I have a sweet pair of motorolas that we use when out water skiing. Very lightweight and good range. When we're out on the water and low on beer I can easily get ahold of someone at camp so they can make a beer run.
