Hi there folks my name is Sasha and im new on here which im sure you would notice from my post count. I hope to get into small game at first and could use all the help there is to offer to start. Im very new to hunting. Got my lic and a CZ 452. So my Q is what are the laws about rabbit hunting?? What do i need to know??? Where is a good place to start looking for places to hunt rabbits?? Im planning to eat what i kill. I would rather go after cotton tails as they taste better. but i would not pass up a jack. I hope to start small and hope to work my self to larger game later. Been trying to read as much as i could about the areas where to hunt but its hard to figure out and i dont want to make mistakes and pay fines. Sasha

Welcome to the forum and welcome to hunting. Unfortunately you missed cotton tail season till July. Cotton tail season is from July 1 to the last sunday in January. Cotton tails are good eating and i admire your wanting to eat what you kill but im not big on eating jacks. I'm sure you can but none for me thanks. The best thing you can do to learn is go to the fish and game website http://www.dfg.ca.gov/ and read all of the rules and regs.

The general season on jack rabbits is open all year and there's no bag limit.

I know everyone has his\her own favroit spot. Any idea where to start looking not too far from LA area??? Its hard to make ends or tails on fish and game site. Is there any specifc page to read that someone can post. It sort of hard to figure it all out on your own never done it before. Any mistake would be rewarded with a nice fine with my luck. Sasha

This should help you out.http://www.fgc.ca.go.../mammalregs.aspAs for where to hunt the only place i have been in LA is disneyland so the only thing i can suggest is go the the BLM website and look for public land in your area.

Plan on spending a lot of money on gas, hiking from dawn til dusk, and putting a lot of miles on your car. When you do find your honey hole after all of that work, you will guard with everything you have just about. I am going into my second season of hunting here in CA, and it hasn't been a easy walk at all. The great thing about this site is the tid bits of information gained is very useful. Just be persistent and don't give up out there. Good Luck to you.

Try looking a the national forests around there. I'm pretty sure that the los Padres and all of the wilderness areas are legal but you should check.

Thats the hardest part for now. Figuring out what areas are o.k to hunt. After i figure that part out i can take a few hikes or do some geocaching in the area and see if there are any rabbits and where they hide.
