Hey guysI am new to predator hunting and am trying to find out what to do with the coyotes once you kill them (if you do)? They cant be any good to eat right? Do you skin them or what? Any advice would be great.

Skin 'em up and sell the fur, or you could save the fur up and get something really nice made up for yourself. I'd have to be one really hungry varmint to eat a coyote. You could also have the skulls professionally finished for a handsome trophy. There's somebody on here that does that with dermestid beetles. That would probably be pretty cool. Personally, I'd like to get a nice coat made up out of the furs.
I'd rather be fishing with my son.

You can't sell the firs in California without a trappers licsense and te dogs in the desert don't have the greatest pelts. If you hunt in the mountains the fir can be good and might be worth keeping. Switch is an advertiser here that has a skull business and can take care of the skull for you, you can do it yourself also but it can be a long process without the right equipment. There is a link here somewhere for a place that can tan the fir for you for around $25 you can find that if you do a search. Good luck, Ron

During the class today the instructor said that he donates the meat to some zoo to help feed the animals there. Like a dummy, I forgot to ask him for the contact information.

No, it was a hunter safety course. I should have clarified that earlier, sorry. The instructor hunts coyotes as well. I had to take the class today because I lost my certificate from when I took it when I was about 13 years old. Kind of a bummer, but at least I got to catch up on the rules a little bit, so it wasn't all that bad. What does it take to get a trappers license? I could have asked the instructor today, but here I am, a day late and a dollar short, again...

Leave them lay, liable to get fleas or something if you touch them. Or mange... maybe that is why my hair is all falling out...lol.I have been known to set them up on a fence corner where the amigos will see them feeding cows the next morning, but only because they were having problems with coyotes in the calves and a little good PR never hurts in that situation. People used to hang them on fences along roads, and I've seen a whole bunch hanging on fence down by Platina, CA. I think that could attract a lot of the wrong kind of attention though, esp if there are PETA types around.

All you had to do was go to a DFG local office and they would have been able to pull yours up and give you a new one. I did it for B.I.L. once before. That is for California though, I am not sure what state you got yours in.

It was here in California. I took the class when I was about 13 years old. I never got the validation stamp for it though. The old hunter safety certificate is still around somewhere, but I'd have to do a lot of looking to find it. I just figured that I'd probably be better off doing it all over again, that way I can catch up on any changes that have been made and be up to date on the laws. At least it's done now and I got my license, so I'm good to go.

They didn't keep that info on record for some of us older guys, and I'm not that old. It's good to have the hunters safety card anyways because some states require one to purchase their license and tags.

Not only that, how long ago was that (getting a new safety card)? A friend has been trying for a week and won't believe the run around... long storyBottom line, F&G records were very poor up until just a few years ago on hunter Ed records... and they have been changing their system as short as approx 2 yrs ago... If you need a replacement they are likely not to give you one right away, but rather a new card AND CERTIFICATE #, unlike the old stamp & #... We were told by Sacramento F&G it would take up to 14 days to receive a new one. Anyway our friend will not be able to take advantage of earning a point on Colorado's limited hunts due to this. (we didn't know we were going to put in until about a week ago). I have less respect for our f&g every year. More environmentalists than wildlife mgrs running the show, not too mention what we get (or don't get for our $$)... Sorry, but is irritating!Frank

Dang, I took my course in 1955, if I can remember back that far. Do you suppose they have a record of it? :signlol2iu: I suppose I would have to take it over again if I wanted to hunt outta state. Stupid rule.

I took the class again too when I moved back here to California again. It was nice to get updated on information. My bro in law took his class in '96, so it wasn't that bad to get. Also, it was disheartening to hear the damage the Mtn. Lions are doing the deer population out there.

Well, that was a while ago. I guess it was about 1990. I know for certain that I still have that hunter safety certificate, I'm just not too sure where to start looking for it. It will pop up one of these days when I'm looking for something else. Then I can kick myself in the tail.

Yeah, you may want to sniff that thing out one of these days, especially if you ever think about hunting out of state. You won't need it for Colorado if you were born before '49 like some of us old goats, but everyone else will need it. There are 7 in our group putting in for Colorado this year, 2 of us too old to need the hunter safety cards and one that can't find his. The other 4 spent 2 or 3 days before finding theirs. YIKES! Now days Colorado requires the safety card AND their hunting license to be in the hunters posession and will be sited if they do not have both OR the card # does not agree what is on record. At least that is what I was told about a week ago by Colorado F&G.HEY, did anyone just now feel the earthquake? I'll guess about a 4.0 We'll seeFrank

Yeah, I just took the Hunter Safety Course on the 3rd at the Bass Pro Shop in Rancho Cucamonga. I'm working on getting more information about donating coyote carcasses to the zoo. As soon as I hear back from my contact, and if I get permission, I will post the information here.

I am suprised they would feed them to anything. I tried once cooking one up for my dogs. They wouldnt eat it. Matter of fact a buzzard seems to need to be really hungary before eating them. For buzzards ,skunk is ther favorite!! gone in minutes of dispatching one.
