I was thinking on buying a bear tag this season.I wanted too know if its legal too call them in with a e caller or hand call.I was wondering if they would respond too a fawn distress call.

Shoot-it, A fawn in distress works well on bears. I call a few up every year using just a handcall and my usual rabbit in distress call incidental to my coyote calling. But I have targeted bears and changed my sound to more of a bahhh instead of a wahh. Sheepish sounding is the best I can describe it. If you have ever heard the sound a gut shot deer makes when hit, that's the sound I try to make. The bears we have in Nevada are protected and have no fear of man and are a lot easier to call in than the ones I used to call in Washington where they were hunted and had a fear of man....Give it a try. They are pretty exciting at times...Walt

You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.

No on the electronic callers for bear in CA. I do not know about hand calls. Have you checked the big game regs?

The guy next door has had a big old bear come into his yard, but not when i was there last season I had a tag.He doesn't like hunters who cares the forest starts at the end of his yard .... I hate those kind .As for the e callers I looked in the dfg wed site regulation of takeing bear it doesn't say anything about calling what so ever.

The only thing I found in the regs. was about not being able to use electic callers for NonGame Birds or Mammals except for coyotes, etc..I'm not sure, they leave it vague (of course) by not specifically listing what you can and can't hunt with ecallers..It's in sect. 475 of the booklet. Or just open it up online and do a word search for electronic or electric.

The bear i took, was a guided hunt with dogs. I had just gotten out of the hospital w/ a second kidney xplant and the wife i could go if i wanted. Took her with a .35 Rem out of a 14" contender (the bear, not the wife). Shot was about 60 yards. Just behind her ear (again, the bear). Dropped and didn't even twich. Adrenalin high lasted for a couple of days. :-)The call i have is an open reed call made by Rich Cronk. I got it from him several years ago. I have used it to call in something, but never got it to come out of the brush. My guess was a good sized bear, or a bigger mother in law. :-)steve

I'm gonna try that tomorrow with all my closed reeds that I have. I'm pretty sure I can make that sound happen. As a matter of fact I just got a closed reed from Alpenliter that might be perfect for this, I'll let you know how it comes out.Oh yeah, Shoot-it: You should be using a bow, not one of those sissy guns for bear.

Try up around Lake Arrowhead I talked to the forest service up there and they tell me that the bears are thick up there and more need to be harvested than currently are. In close to town it is shotgun or archery only. This is all I know. Call the forest svc they were decent to work with when I was up there working.

I don't know if it is legal where you are but we used to use a small can of scorched honey to draw the bears into an area and then call the area when you find tracks showing a bear was there. Worked well, but like I said I don't know if it is legal to do where you are...Walt ha, ha maybe you could drop a really well soaked peanut butter and honey sandwich while having lunch. Satan made me say that. LOL...Walt
