I just purchased (yesterday) a Remington 700 sps varmint 223 with a 1:12 twist and I'm not sure which kind of scope to get. Im going to be mostly varming/target shooting. Primarily (hopefully) varmint. So I'm looking for something within the 200-300 dollar range max. However I know you get what you pay for for scopes. But that is all I can afford. I'm looking at something along the lines of 3-9x40 or something close I would prefer something like a 3-9x50 but I wanted some input from all of you. Also what kind of mounts for a rem700 sps v? 1 piece or 2 piece? Low, Medium or High? Looking at firing at a range up to about 400 max (maybe a little more if I'm feeling a little more daring). Any ideas?

A couple other choices based on your $$$ requirement and best bang for the buck. I tend to like more mag. from my bench rest daze... I own all of these and the Nikon might be my favorite but they are all pretty good. I put them in order of optics performance in my opinion. If by "varmint" you mean squirrels, prairie dogs and no coyotes with your target shooting, then more magnification than 9 power would be better... 12, 14, 16 etc on the high end in other words, with anything above 12 being more ideal. Adjustable Objectives (ugh, here we go again), would be good with higher than 12 power, but is also more expensive. I probably would be hesitant to go any higher than 6x on the low end. Probably? I also do not like 50mm bells. Sits the scope up wayyyy too high and is really not needed for average varmint / target work. And, it is the scope that will determine what size rings you will need for the most part... Medium size rings for variable scopes is usually the norm.my Frank

Awesome. Thank you for the info. I will check into these scopes and pass them by the master for approval (the wife ) and we'll go from there. So the 50mm I should not go for? What is was thinking of going with was the Leupold 3.5-10x50 (or close to it) or x40 I cant remember which one. I think it was 40. I don't want a high mount I dont want a bulky rifle and for my head it just wouldn't work for me. I dont always use the magnification I dont know if it's too much of a problem at least I don't think so. I like to leave it where i sighted it cause I prefer to use the spotting scope to do that to verify my shot and range. I do not have a range finder, I like to use my own guesstimation for that. Right now, Natchez has a great deal on the Bushnell Legend 5-15x40 AO mildot for $135. http://www.natchezss...amp;src=tpSlrHmI own 2 of them that I paid $159/each last year and even that was a good price at the time. They are very decent glass for the money. Pretty tough, too, and not too heavy or too long for a hunting rifle yet still good for rested varmint work.

This has probably been discussed many times and is probably best for a separate topic since many variables are involved but I see this debate frequently. The advantage of a larger objective lens such as a 50mm is to allow a larger exit pupil when using higher magnifications levels. For example, with a 40mm scope, on 10 power, the exit pupil is 4mm, if you have a 50mm objective, the exit pupil is 5mm. The 5mm exit pupil number is about the maximum diameter that the human eye can utilize (at least for those of us over about the age of 50 yrs). The big advantage is at twilight and long distance, you can crank your scope up to a higher power setting (given other things equal) and not have it blackout so it is dependent on magnification, etc. The trouble is normally other things are not equal and you are often comparing different scopes from different manufacturers and in the end you have to try them all out under various conditions and looking at different sized objects are various distances.

I'm not to into busnell but are they reliable and worth the money? I want a reliable scope even if the specs arent great right now. I can always get a better scope later and put this on my other rifle and get a better one later. Even if its just basic BUT quality is what I'm looking for and reliability... I like regular duplex's or Mil Dot style crosshairs. I'm old fashioned I guess.
