Are these rounds interchangeable? Can I shoot the .243 Ackley Improved in a .243 Win? Has anyone played with these enough to have an educated opinion? Based on what I have read, the .243 Ackley Improved round seems to have an edge over the .243 Win. in longer range accuracy.

The A.I. line of cartridges give an approx increase in velocity of 10%. To form the A.I. case, the parent cartridge is fired in the new chamber.A .243 Win is fired in a .243 Ackley chamber to create the new case. Cannot fire an A.I. in a standard chamber.

The way it works is, you shoot a standard .243 in the AI version and it changes the shape of the case to match the Ackley chamber. Once they have been fired you reload them as AI rounds. You cant however then fire those rounds in a standard ,243. The case shape will be different.

I just did a search on the 243 AI because there is no loading data in my Nosler. Hornady, Barnes or Sierra reloading manuals. The Hodgdon reloading data center does not have anything on the 243 AI either. What I found was the 243 AI case will hold about 5 grains more powder than the 243 Win will. The 243 Win is plenty fast enough for me.

The 243 doesn't have enough taper to make a significant improvement by AI'ing it. The rule of thumb is for every 4% capacity increase you get a 1% velocity increase. Tapered cases like the 250 Savage, the 22.250 etc. will show a lot more benefit from AI ing.
