Newbie question but what do you guys do with the dogs you kill? mount them? leave them? put their heads on a post to warn the others? Looked up on the internet and got many mixed answers...Note I have no judgments over whatever, just damn curious, i totally understand hunting them simply because they are vermin and there is no shortage. kind of like ground squirrels?

I asked that same question a couple of years ago. No responses. To leave them lay... would that be considered "wanton waste" by DFG? Just curious, not accusing anyone of anything.

Wanton waste only applies when it is a game animal. Since coyotes are non-game animals it doesn't apply to them. Leaving jack rabbits is wanton waste because they are considered game. If a coyote has a decent pelt many will save it.

Thanks SJ. That is very helpful. I have had difficulty finding specific info on guidelines and definitions about that topic in the regs. As always, this forum is a great resource of useful information.

Hello, newbie here. I just got my certificate. And i havent read the rules and regulations yet. IM in Riverside area. Okay, so are coyotes in season right now or all year round? What else is in season? Oh and so i wont get in trouble for leaving a dead yote. The instructor at bass pro said he takes his to a place were zoos use the meat. And great yote question i was wondering the same thing. I might go out this weekend then. :smiley-innocent-halo-yellow:

Please tell us you mean you eat the BBQ'd PELTS - not the meat. Eating coyote meat would be nasty! :smiley-innocent-halo-yellow:

Coyotes and Jackrabbits are in season year round. If you want to skin the coyote that is up to you. If you would rather leave it for food for other critters than that is your choice too. Some folks have the furs tanned and made into useful items. If they have Mange... just leave em lay... Good Luck.

Where does the guy from BPS take his dead coyotes? I took my first the other weekend and let him sit on a hillside for a hour or two....stiff as a board when I went to toss him.

Dont know, he was mentioning how nothing goes to waste. He eats, or finds some use of everything he kills.

I have in fact in my desk drawer right now, receipts from Kenny for 5 Coyotes I took to him year before last. It's like having money in the bank. I never met a man that honest in my life.Jim

Wow! I'm afraid guys like old Kenny are getting scarce. Any chance of getting him to run for political office? Thanks for that story.

Very interesting story jimhs. I would imagine that the pelts up there are of a little higher quality than most from Southern CA, and therefore worth a little more. Also, your a lot closer to Prineville for the sale than most of CA.How do the pelts from your area compare to something off of the desert, like say the Owyhees or Burns area?We have an old guy in town that does the same thing, but he justs skins them and stretches them for you for a little extra drinking money. I haven't really felt the need to support him for a while. I haven't had any extraordinary pelts in quite a while either. That is pretty neat however that he pays you for them and everything. Sounds like a neat guy.

We don't get many coyotes with great pelts. If I do, I have a fellow with 9 kids who gladly comes and gets them, skins them, and sell them. The others go to the farm junkpile or sinkhole.
