Where in the Cleveland National Forest?

The Descanso district. Being from Escondido the Palomar district is much better for almost everything...deer, rabbit, etc.S&S

SDiegohunt,Looking forward to another post. I think you've probably shot enough game and checked this forum enough to change how you lay out your rabbits on your next post. :) :)

Spot and Stalk. I am not exactly sure what you mean. I guess my original picture does have them haphazardly arrayed. In future posts I will certainly make the effort to line them up pretty :) Better yet, I see that you are from SD also, care to join me and let's see if we can double our bounty??! I will let you lay them out however you like. SDH

S&S,Definitely planning on going out for the new season; picked up the new license :smiley_kewlpics: Honestly, I think that numbers are down this year in my neck of the woods. I will be hard-pressed to post that many in one outing again. But I will definitely try. I need to live in a different part of the state. As a preview, Here is a pic of a Jack I got recenlty at about 250 yards with the 22-250 , Vmax 50 gr Moly. Skinned his hind leg and shattered right foreleg shoulder area. No entry wound seen. Must have been the shrapnel. Just a small trickle of blood from the nostrils when I picked him up.Attached File  1.jpg   42.53K   21 downloads

FB,I love it...it looks like three healthy "Southern Mule Deer". I'm not seeing any serious antlers, but that's expected based upon sub-species type and habitat. Are you marking those on the GPS for later use? :smiley_kewlpics: S&S

Are you kidding me? I am peeing a line in the sand and making sure I get back there ASAP on opening day on those cloven hooved ungulates. Only one buck in the group. He held back and was in velvet. Ears were practically longer than the tips of his tines. For now, just lagomorphs will fill the game bag. And maybe an unlucky yote.Send me a PM if you wish to join me next time. Could use the company again.

Any success with the lagomorphs or canis latrans? It seems as though the coyote population is down compared to last year. :roflmao3[1]: S&S

FYI, I have the Ruger M77 Mark II. After originally being slightly disappointed in my rifle I have absolutely fallen in love with the rifle. The rifle simply won't shoot sub-MOA off the bench, but when I do my part and hold it steady in the field...it simply doesn't miss. I just popped a jack-rabbit this past weekend that was at 400 yards according to the Leica rangefinder. The Ruger is reasonably light for easy carrying in the field when needed, but not an ultra-light so it dampens the mild kick a .204 produces...enough to spot your kill through the scope on the shot. The trigger has a very slight amount of travel, but it's consistent and the trigger weight is light enough to nullify any creep/slack/travel in the trigger.Having said that, if I was to do it again I'd buy the Remington 700 VS SF II. A friend of mine has the rifle in 22-250 and the rifle is sweet...except in typically Remington fashion it needs a trigger adjustment. The pull weight is at least 8lbs+.Good luck and have fun with your research...post some picks or atleast post what you decided on.S&S

Jacks are way down but the cotton tails are still in good numbers. Hope this rain helps.

Any recipe I should know about...the thought and act of eating Jacks...especially the San Diego version...covered in ticks is not real appealing. SnS

Not right off the top of my head. But you better get used to taking them home and eating them because they are classified a game animal in California. Leaving them lay is considered wanton waste and an offense you can be cited for.

Funny you mention "wanton waste". I was just discussing this with a group of shooters tonight at the range. Seems that some of them have the idea of shooting rabbits and using them to retrain coyotes to come to the call. I got a stern warning several years ago from a Game Warden who enlightened me on "wanton waste". Man, there are too many laws to keep track of. Just don't get caught wasting game animals!!!

I love California...is there any other state that has microstamping, waiting periods for handguns and long arms, limits on how many hand guns you can buy per month, lead ammo bans-restrictions, no spring bear season, no cougar hunting, 50 caliber rifles are illegal, 10 round magazine limits, your AR-15 has to be in no less than 20 pieces to be legal, State DOJ fee ($25), gun lock rules, gun safe rules, a $40 resident hunting license...and the kicker that truly makes CA unique...don't leave a tick infested Jack Rabbit in the field to waste (coyote will eat it anyway) or we will cite you so we can give the money to some entitlement program that is sinking CA faster than the Titanic. :signlol2iu: Feeew, I feel better. :smiley-funny-post-sign:
