Got drawn for Period 4 of the Tenemaha (Big Pine, Ca) antlerless Tule Elk hunt. It's usually a pretty easy hunt during Period 1 & 2, since the elk stick around the alfalfa fields on both sides of hwy 395. It was sort of shocking to get into Big Pine yesterday and see that all the alfalfa fields had been cut, and there wasn't a elk anywhere in sight. So we spent yesterday afternoon/evening scouting around Owens River and the lava beds above town. Didn't see a thing. After 7 hours of scouting and glassing this morning, we found 1 single elk in a small arroyo. Got it with my Freedom Arms .454 Casull.  1.jpg   38.49K   10 downloads

"Tule Elk considered the smallest of all the Elk species in North America. The adult bulls have an average weight of 450-500 lbs., with a rare few topping the scales at up to 700lbs. The adult cows average 375-425 lbs. The yearlings (spike bulls) average the same weight as the adult females. The coats are a light buffy beige with a darker brown long haired mane circling the necks of both the males and females. The calves are similar to regular deer calves, with a light brown spotted coat. All animals display a prominent white rump. They average 7 feet in length and stand 4-5 feet in height at the shoulder. The male yearlings are also known as spikes, during their first year of antler growth they only have one antler that is very thin and spindly compared to the large six point racks that the dominant males demonstrate. The females do not have antlers and the males drop theirs annually which re-grow a little larger with more tines as the yearling ages. "

Very nice! I really want to move into hunting with handguns. I recently got a 44mag that I'm planning to mount a scope on. What scope are you using? What range are you comfortable shooting out to?

I've got a Leupold 2X. I'm comfortable out to 60-65 yards freehand, and about 100-125 yards with a rest. I sight in the scoped handguns (except contender) at 75 yards, and iron sights at 50 yards.
