So to keep the feet on, just skin around the leg bones and leave the paws attached?

  • Interests:Hunting is all new to me but it has over come fishing. with my bow i can do it all. but now that i got my air rifle, that i will only use for birds, (my arrows ruined to much meat.) i can now embark on a new found interest. HUNTING and the outdoors. besides that i just play videos games and hang out with friends. Spend time at the local watering holes.

Dude! You bow hunt and you are wondering about what to do with the pelt? Well the first thing I plan on doing with my coyote pelt is making it into my quiver for thursday nights bow hunters meeting! My other pelts are being used to make a bow sling and other cool archery stuff! Its almost time to get out there for the yotes putting on their fall coats! As for the meat you can just forget about that! Its a scavenger and a nasty one at that! Just dig a shallow pit and sit and wait to see what comes to dig it up! The teeth and nails are going to make a bitchin' necklace! I'll post pics when I get all the stuff done!

socal399, what guns do you have? just a .22??? There are multiple different calibers out there that will take a coyote. Try to stay away from the rimfire rounds, as they do not pack as much power as the centerfire rounds do. As for the shot gun, you cant go wrong with the #4 buck shot if they are within range (70 yds max). I usually have both my shotty with me and a long gun to cover both situations, (the close in encounter and the far away stand off). It gets heavy carrying both from stand to stand but it seems to work great for me. .17 remington, .17 fireball, .204 ruger, .22 hornet(rimfire round), .220 swift, .221 fireball, .222remington, .22-250 remington, .223 remington, .243, 25-06, 30-06 with excelerator rounds are all great to take coyotes. The smaller the bullet, the less damaged there is to the pelt in theory. Some will shoot flatter than others and some will reach out there and touch them a little further than others. Most common is the .223 remington and the .22-250. Hope this will help you out. And yes you can shoot a coyote with a shotgun with #4 buck or a 22-250. Good luck!!!

:signs1111cr: now ya tell me........ lolsocal399, as Ed-d pointed out there are lots of good calibers. Just have to do like you're already doing by asking lots of questions & visiting lots of gun stores & HANDLING different brands & styles etc. That is where you are really going to find out which one feels & looks best for you.The more popular predator rounds are indeed the 223, 204, 22-250. AND for good reasons (that might take a small book to explain)! Anything else may (or may not) make it more complicated than needs to be. Whenever I buy anything, it is not the cheapest or most expensive or the smallest or largest etc. I have all 3 calibers. IF I HAD to keep just one, it would be between the 22-250 & the 223, with the 223 possibly getting the nod? Possibly!Oh, did you ever visit "AllPREDATORCALLS.COM" on the internet? There are some good dvds by Randy Anderson(& Primos) especially! Less Johnson is also good, but not quite as educational. ALLPREDATORCALLS also has dvds on skinning coyotes.Let us know how you do & Good LuckFrank

Well I have a 30 06, 870 remington and I was going to borrow my brothers 22. I went to turners lastnight and they didnt have a 22-250. I Looked at a 223.I think they wanted 699-0r 599. i wanted to go with the 22-250 because my step son will learn how to shoot with it as well. So kind of a dual purpose gun I can hunt coyotes and he can learn to shot with it.Ill visit that sight and check out what they have.So I am abel to hunt with my 30 06 with excelerator rounds

The 30/06 will work very well... pretty much with any bullet, not just accelerators. However the lighter constructed "varmint" rounds (130gr(?) & less) may be a tad better for the job, even though highly destructive. I love the 22-250 & would be very hard pressed to choose between it & the 223. Fortunately I do not have to (choose). lolUnless I am missing something (again), it sounds like your saying the 22-250 will be light in recoil, which of course it is. However, the 223 has considerably less recoil yet. But again, I may not be understanding your note?Anyway, sounds like your on a roll and all the best on your huntsFrank

Y a I was trying to figure out which wasy to go 22-250- or 223. I m looking for a gun with not a lot of recoil so my step son can shoot it. Hes 10. Also have a budget and dont want to spend 600 either.

Think about ammo costs and availability. yes the 22-250 is pretty common but the .223 is even more so. you can walk into almost any sporting goods store anywhere and find ammo for it. plus there is alot of .223 ammo out there that is alot alot cheaper than the 22-250. the .223 uses less powder than the 22-250 so in turn it will kick less and its a bit cheaper to produce. just something to think about in quest of the perfect varmint rifle. oh and also think about weight of the rifle. there are the heavy barrels out there thats fine to shoot if you take a bench rest with you everywhere, or the sporter barrels that are slimmer in diameter and lighter to carry around all day long (or for a 10 year old to comfortably carry and shoot). if your trying to save pelts then stay away from the 30-06. it letteraly guts the animal for you and does a job on their pelts. good luck on the quest. :smiley-innocent-halo-yellow:

Ontario Gun Show this weekend Oct. 24-25. get there early to get in. i stood in line for an hour last time just to get a ticket to get in. a bunch a freaks there trying to stock up on any ammo they can get their hands on. open sat 9-5 and sun 9-4. also another gun show jan. 2-3 in ontario. its at the ontario convention center. one ticket good for both days. Take lots of money. i always find good stuff there like a new set of camos or a new rifle or scope. i think my dad paid around $400 for a remington 243 at the gun show last year. but check out bass pro also.

I keep the summer pelts if thier clean they are great to make stuff with. you do not need long hair on a quiver or hat. Mike that is a cool hat got to make one.
You can hop but you can't hide. Yahi Bowmen. Its not how far you can shoot but how close to the game you get when you shoot. Sights we don't need any sights. Why waist time reloading when I can be making arrows.
