Im going out to see if I can get a coyote. This will be my first time hunting them, so I have a few questions. So after you shoot it what do you do with it? I know you can mount it. Would it be a good idea to eat it? Skin it and throw the meat away? I would like to mount it depending on the size. Any advice you guys can give me

Most of the ones I shoot here in SoCal are not worth saving. Pelts are not great. I use to cut the tail and the rest was buzzard bait.

I wouldn't recommend eating one, but by all means skin it out if you want. Everything doesn't always need to be about value... true, most socal coyotes are not worth anything on the fur market...but it doesn't mean it isn't worth someone to the guy or gal that takes it. If you never shot a coyote it would be cool to have the hide of the first one you get. I've taken plenty of coyotes during this time frame that gave up a nice hide. It also good practice if not for anything else.

My question is.. What do you do with a pile of unwanted worthless fur? Sell them for Chew Toys? :roflmao3[1]:

I wasn't sure what to do with the meat so I thought. I would ask. The fur I. Wanted to keep because it is my first coyote. Nice looking or not I thought that would be cool. So how would I skin it?

ditto tawnoper... on all of it...btw, coyote meat really ain't that bad. The key is marinating for approx 3 days in the Refrigerator. Add your favorite spices, onions, veggies, potatoes & a really good pint of Wiskey. Wiskey being the most important. Trust me; I know what I'm doing.Frankp.s. there are good quality coyote hides in Ca... just depends on when & where they are taken. Obviously a Dec, Minnesota dog may be hard, if not impossible to match. But hey, still not bad here! ok, so I lied on eating the coyote, but not the hides. lol

If you want to keep just the tail, then i would cut it off where it meets the back. You should remove the bone in the tail to keep the stink down. Just make one nice straight cut with a sharp skinning knife, down the underside of the tail from the base to about an inch from the tip. Remove the bone and then salt the skin to draw the moister and stinky stuff out of the skin. That will help preserve the tail and keep your wife from yelling at you when the thing starts smelling up the house. There are also some home tanning kits online that you could pick up to tan the whole skin so it wont cost you $85 for a professional tanned socal coyote skin. Start practicing the skinnig process on these rascals out here so you dont wreck a nice one when you get one. Good luck and take your time. It will pay off.

My first had a crappy hide so I kept the skull. There are several guys on here that will sick there beetles on it for you, or you can soak it in water for a while to "melt" the meat away. Ask Coyotehuntress for the best way. I just boiled the hell out of mine on an open fire, OUTSIDE...not a soup I'd be bringing to work for leftovers if you know what I mean, but the skull did turn out great for my first trophy. Good luck, at least someone's getting out there chasing some fur! Go get 'em!
