A lot of Jackrabbits. I saw a bunch this past weekend. Actually I went on a fishing trip over the weekend but on the drive home stopped out in the desert to do some shooting and check things out. On the drive up we saw 4 road crossing coyotes and a mess of smashed jacks. Also saw a few road killed coyotes and one hit bobcat. I have seen 3 road killed cats in the last few months, more then I?ve ever seen in such a short time. We made a short stand early one morning before sunup; about five minutes in I see something coming in. I wasn?t sure what it was till it got close then I saw it was a little pup coyote, not much bigger then a jackrabbit. Anyway, on the drive home I stopped out to do some shooting and hopefully jump up a few jacks. Here are a few pics:Saw lots of these guys lounging in the shade.Posted ImageNo, I didn?t shoot this one. Didn?t end up shooting any of the ?models?Posted ImageHere are a few I shot after one stroll around the truck. Stopped the truck a couple more times to walk around and jump shoot jacks with similar results. Rifle: .223 Sako Posted Image

You going to try that young one on the left to see how it eats? How were the ticks on 'em?

Nah, the crows beat me to him. I doubt the ticks tasted much better but I didn't try them either. ;)

Hey Tawnoper, I see you're from T.O. I grew up there and parents still live there. Coming down over the 4th, maybe we can hook up and head out for a day?

They had a few on the ears. I didn't check them out too closely though.

Thanks...As for eating them, nah I'll pass. I've heard of some people cooking the younger ones up but most of the people I know who tried them said they were not that good.

Out in the desert the stuff the rabbits eat is pretty strong tasting. So the rabbits have a tendency to taste strongly too.

I'll have to concur with that statement. Creosote bush and sage fed jacks wouldn't be on my menu - even if I was cooking for you Shooter. :o :o And you have eaten just about everything that wasn't fast enough to get away.db

nice rabbits you got there, but I would've shot the "models" too :o
Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

Grind'em up and make breakfast sausage out of them. I tried some that a guy made awhile back and it was good and he shot them in the desert and said he used whatever he shot and wasn't concerned with how old they were.

That sounds alright. But I think I'll leave those tasty ticks out with the fur. :D

When you grind them up, do you mix the meat with any other kind like pork, etc. I know they to that with some of the other sausage materials. Any specific spices you have used that work well with Jacks?db

I don't know what he used but it was good. I have a cook book for wild game that gives a recipe for it though. I will check and post it the next time I get home.
