Buddy of mine forwarded these to me, said Oregon Fish & Game is looking into whether or not it might be a new state record. Supposedly it was taken in the Siuslaw Unit (which is where I live & coincidentally I've had a bear hanging around my house lately -see last 2 pics-...). I'll update as soon as I can get some more details.

And my little neighbor:

Knocked over & emptied out my deer feeder:

Bear was shot May 9th, it weighed in at just over 600 pounds (waiting for Fish & Game to verify though), and the lucky hunter's name is Jake Tidball. That's all I know for now...

Braz- Last year our general season closed on December 31st but starting this year OF&G has offered (in addition to other controlled hunts) a SW Oregon Spring Black Bear season. 3,750 tags are on a first come, first served basis. Last year something like 8 or 9 bears had to be killed in the coast range due to overpopulation. They were showing up in people's backyards digging through their garbage cans! They've also added additional cougar hunts as well. I can only assume this is due to OF&G's ban on the use of dogs for cougars & bears that went into effect several years ago, plus the budget cuts that have severely limited state funded predator trapping for ranchers & farmers. And, now we have wolves to worry about in the eastern part of the state too... I may be wrong but at this rate I suspect OF&G will have to eventually reinstate the use of dogs even if it is prohibited or restricted for certain areas/species/seasons.

I got to give the guy credit though.. AS stinky as them bears are I would be very hesitant to wrap my arms around that sucker.. Man they stink LOL

Nice looking bear! And, the coat seems to be in great shape for a Spring bear hunt...Ya know, I think California should've done something like that to help with some budget woes. Not saying that a Spring bear hunt or a cougar hunt would put a significant dent in the budget issues, but they should be should looking at "all" avenues.
